I received a report from reader K on being part of a telephone survey on Tuesday night about neighborhood grocery stores. It apparently started with generic questions on where K shops, followed by questions about what kind of new grocery store K would like to see in the neighborhood, with options like Harris Teeter, Trader Joe's and Yes! being on the list. (Interestingly, given last night's Twitter eruption on Wal-Mart perhaps coming to DC, K says there were lots of questions about whether the neighborhood would support a "low-price" store.)
The interview then moved to specific questions about what K "would like to see at the new Harris Teeter at 5th and M by the Navy Yard." K said that the interviewer made the store sound like a done deal--which it certainly has seemed to be for a while now given all the hints and not-confirmed media stories about letters of intent, but there still has never been an official announcement from either Forest City or Harris Teeter that HT is indeed coming to the new residential building planned for 401 M St., SE at The Yards. One way or the other, it appears that construction on this building may be getting started next year--see my recent entries for details.

Wegmans has shown absolutely no interest in building urban stores. They want huge lots with lots of space (and lots of parking).

A typical large urban grocery store is around 50,000SF. I think the typical Wegman's footprint is 120,000SF. Just not going to happen.

I actually like Harris Teeter alot. It's superior in my mind to Safeway and Giant from a product and customer service perspective. Whole Foods and Trader Joes are good but I can only get part of my shopping done at either which is an inconvenience.

Trader Joe's would be my store of choice. A Safeway or Giant would be OK, althought I could just go a few blocks to the other Safeway. So, it is not really that much of a benefit. I would probably not shop at the Harris Teeter ...too expensive.

I participated in a phone survey on Monday evening about big-box stores for the city, such as Target and Wal-Mart. They also asked a lot of questions about current city council members and the absence of grocery stores east of the river (I live close to the Capitol Bldg). Then on Tuesday night I was called for a survey about grocery stores "in my area." They asked where I did my primary shopping and when I told them Eastern Market, the caller didn't know what that was. When I told him, he hung up.

WTOP is reporting ( link ) that Walmart is planning on opening 4 stores in DC by the years 2012, and it mentions that a mixed use site on New Jersey Avenue NW as one of the sites it plans to build on. Could they possibly be talking about the mixed use site on New Jersey Avenue SE, next to the Old Washington Post Plant?

In my mind this location is awfully close to the one by Potomac Ave, but I guess it would be convenient for those without cars. For those of us that work in and around the Navy Yard it would also be nice to walk to-- they should consider putting in a killer salad bar for the weekday lunch crowds.
