Page Through from Before to After

The agenda for Monday's ANC 6D meeting is now being circulated (slightly revised from one that went out earlier today). One item of Near SE interest is an update on the Yards Park and also the Parcel D residential/grocery project, which is now scheduled to go before the Zoning Commission on Dec. 2.
The revised agenda also now shows a new request to change the name of the Navy Yard Metro station; while last time it was the Capitol Riverfront BID requesting that the name be changed to Capitol Riverfront/Nationals Park/Navy Yard (which the ANC supported as long as "Capitol Riverfront" wasn't first), this time it's the Nationals themselves requesting that "Nationals Stadium" be added to the Navy Yard name. (I wouldn't put 100% confidence in the request being for "Nationals Stadium" and not "Nationals Park," but that's what the agenda says.) I'm trying to find out whether the first request has bitten the dust, or if these are competing requests, or what. Stay tuned. (See below for clarifications.)
There's also a request to add "Banneker Memorial Park" to the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station name. As well as a bunch of other stuff happening on the other side of South Capitol Street, which I leave to other people to pay attention to!
UPDATE: The BID has told me that this is just the Nationals requesting to be added so that they can be part of the Capitol Riverfront/Nationals Park/Navy Yard new name, though I'm not sure why they would need to have their own request separate from the one that the BID is already working on. Still trying to find out more, but may need to wait until Monday's meeting for clarification.
UPDATE II: Apparently the BID's request was officially just to add "Capitol Riverfront," but they recognized that the Nats would want the stadium included as well. So this ANC action will be to get whatever official name the Nationals want added to the station name into the mix.

Just a heads up: before the next ANC is sworn in, I am going to request that a name be added to the Federal Center SW Metro, making it Federal Center SW/Glenn Favreau Metro Station. Or maybe my name should go first...?

JD says: (10/15/10 2:16 PM)
I totally should have gone for Navy Yard/JDLand back in 2006, when I was the only one around.

Glenn says: (10/15/10 2:17 PM)
JD maybe you and I can dig a new station somewhere close by and use both of our names. Heck, I would even give you first place naming rights.

Michael says: (10/15/10 4:44 PM)
Stop the name diarrhea!

John says: (10/16/10 12:36 PM)
JD were you aware of the "Yards night" that happened at the yards park yesterday. I was down at the park yesterday and they had a big stage and tables setup in the picnic overhang area they said it was for charity. This might be the first ime something was going on in the hood and I didnt hear about it on this site

Mike McMurtrie says: (10/16/10 12:54 PM)
John, that was a 'private event'. This morning, I ran into a couple from NW that were at that event. They were surprised of the amount of development going on in the area. They were especially impressed by the Yards Park. I mentioned they should come down more often and tell their NW friends. They said the definitely would.
Also, The GROVE is open!! Yea!!!

JD says: (10/16/10 12:55 PM)
@John, yes, that was Living Classroom's Night at the Yards annual fundraiser. I didn't write anything about it mainly because after having mentioned it in previous years, and having asked them to put me on their lists to keep me updated, they still never send me anything. And since it was not a cheap fundraiser, I figured they'd decided they were doing fine on their own. It was mentioned in the BID e-mail newsletter, which you might want to subscribe to. (I kind of assume that everyone in the neighborhood already subscribes to that.)

Private fundraisers for non-hood organizations that just happen to be being held in Near Southeast are probably things I'm going to tend to not mention. Too much other stuff to write about. (Though, granted, eventually Living Classrooms hopes to build its new facility at the eastern edge of the Yards Park.)

JD says: (10/16/10 12:56 PM)
Mike--The grove? You mean the River Street Gardens, at the easten edge of the Yards Park?

Mike McMurtrie says: (10/16/10 1:10 PM)
JD, yes. I wasn't sure what it was called. it was a pleasant surprise, to say the least. The boardwalk and the treed area and seating are now open up to the gate to the Navy Yard. The boardwalk must have been recently stained, as you can still smell it. A section between the 'Gardens' and the trapeze school is still cordoned off, though.

JD says: (10/16/10 1:37 PM)
This will be a lovely afternoon to go check that out, Mike--with camera in hand, of course. :-) Thanks!

BillP says: (10/18/10 2:56 PM)
is there any timetable on connecting the yards park to the navy yard? from closer inspection now allowed by the opening of the easternmost edge of yards park, this would seem to not present any security issues as there is an swath of fencing between the navy yard boardwalk and the navy yard itself equivalent to the fencing height that surrounds the rest of the navy yard.

JD says: (10/18/10 2:59 PM)
I haven't heard of any timetable for the opening of the Navy Yard portion of the riverwalk--"talks are progressing" was the last I heard.

And, I haven't been on the Navy Yard's portion in a long time, but looking back in my photos, I see the shots I took in 2004 show no additional fence between the sidewalk and the Navy buildings, so that's been added within the past few years, presumably in preparation for opening the riverwalk to the public.
