 Sliding from Before to After

Yesterday I posted about how the city council had until close of business to decide whether or not to slow down DDOT's planned move to 55 M Street, SE--and now I'm hearing that Marion Barry has filed a "disapproval notice" that does delay the DDOT move. (Apparently he did the same thing with the contract for the new headquarters for the Department of Employment Services.) There will now probably be some behind-the-scenes wrangling to convince Barry to withdraw his disapproval--once/if he does, the contract would then be considered immediately approved, and the move can proceed.

Understandably, as a politicain of current questionable worth to his contemporary consituents, and with his own ulterior motives, I understand his bluster. However, even the greatest hurricanes blow out, no matter how great the torch that lit them. Frankly, this man has become a parody of his gone by glory days. Therefore I am uncertain of why he continues to be elected to office. Surely his ward has many worthy women or men who could more effectively serve the pressing needs of the community which he currently and undeservedly serves. These women and/or men must have the courage to step up. They must say, "thank you sir, but it is time for you to move on with grace and dignity." I see this man and I see squandered opportunity for the greater community/ward that he represents. Alas, this is one man's opinion. We are all certainly entitled to our opinion, and I welcome yours.

Considering that the previous plan was to have the DDOT headquarters in Ward 8 at the foot of the 11th street bridge, it is not a surprise that he "disapproves" of moving it from his Ward to M Street. Especially, considering the building design/office layout was far along for Anacostia Gateway for DDOT in the Williams administration.

The Anacostia Gateway project was not financially feasible. I previously worked for one of the developers that bid on that project and was a finalist. The building was way overdesigned and they would have had a field day with the required rental rate over at the Washington Post. Not to mention that there was no real exit strategy for the developer. I guess DC decided they're already paying enough for that monstrosity over at 225 Virginia.
