Last night DDOT held the first of its eight public meetings to unveil its vision for a 37-mile-long network of streetcar lines connecting various portions of DC in three phases, the first of which would include a line running from MLK Avenue in Anacostia across the 11th Street Bridge, eastward on M Street SE, and then terminating at one block west of Nationals Park. (Phase 3 would include a separate line starting from the same Nats Park terminus, running along M Street SW and up Seventh Street into downtown.) You can see a larger map of all three phases at DDOT's Streetcar site.
I didn't attend the meeting, partially because of time constraints but also because I figured the transit bloggers of the city would be all over it; here's GGW's first post on the plans. These routes aren't set in stone, and in fact Tommy Wells has already expressed his preference that the line shown running along Barracks Row be moved to Hill East to support the expected development there. And I don't believe any timeline of when these phases could be expected was mentioned.
There are seven more meetings still to be held, if you're looking for more detail or to give some feedback to DDOT.
How do we all feel about not only the proposed Near Southeast route, but the plans for streetcars in DC in general?
(UPDATED Oct. 26 after a commenter correctly pointed out that the line is to run down First Street, SW, ending at R Street, not along South Capitol to the ballpark. I need new glasses.)

The route of the MLK/M Street/Blue Line is interesting. If you are in Anacostia and want to head north, you could take Metro, and vice versa.

My guess is it is being built with the new DHS in mind, and the planned re-development there?

The Nat's park and Anacostia are only one stop away from each other. I think street cars are a cool idea, but is that route optimal for connecting Anacostia to the rest of DC?

Why does Wells oppose connecting Barracks Row and the Navy Yard (ball park area) via trolley? Is there a preference for the continuation of little electric golf carts and massive buses?

Hopefully they could get devise special route for the 8th St. line that curves over to Nats Park from H St/8th St. That streetcar would connect dozens of bars with the stadium.

I love streetcars and lived in Portland,OR where they were a wild success. However, the proposed alignment makes no sense. I fear the politicians are just playing politics with where the streetcars are going to go and end up jeopardizing the their ultimate success. The cars themselves are small and make frequent stops. They can't move a lot of people long distances. They can,however, connect neighborhoods to one another as well as places of work. I think a loop connecting the Stadium/Navy Yard, Eastern Market, Union Station, and H street is a missed opportunity. And I don't think extending any lines out to the suburbs is a good idea.

Not sure if the map or description is wrong, but the M Street line (in blue on the map) doesn't go to Nationals Park--it runs down 1st St SW instead, to the intersection of Potomac & R St. The larger question, of course, is who would actually use this rather circuitous line.

The Green Line already does that, so who cares? You sound like a Georgetown resident in the 70s wanting to block the Metro.

Lets look at the obvious here, how often are residents from our neighborhood going to use a trolly car that goes to Anacostia??

I agree with BP, that the only benefit these trolleys would provide to us would be a better link to Capitol Hill/Union Station.

Classic D.C. politics. Smells like Marion Berry.
