From the new "Velocity Voice" newsletter that a reader was nice enough to pass along, a blurb that says "Justin's Cafe" in the ground floor of Velocity (at First and L) will open "this fall." The menu will feature "fresh salads, sandwiches and wood oven baked pizzas," and there will be a full bar. Earlier this year a "late August/September" date had been being given for the restaurant's opening, but clearly that has slipped.
I've been scrounging around for a bit more detail, but don't have much more news. Judging from the city's building permits database, it looks like the restaurant's construction permit was filed in June but hasn't been approved yet (I'd link to it, but DCRA rebuilt their pending apps database to make any links to inside pages impossible--boo). The city's Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration site doesn't show any current liquor license for the site, nor does there appear to have been any recent notification to ANC 6D about one, but the ABRA web site isn't always up-to-the-minute accurate; I've got a question into them about any pending license. (I'll update when/if I hear back.) UPDATE: ABRA doesn't have any liquor license already on file, and no new application has been filed yet. Doesn't mean that one isn't coming, of course, just that it hasn't happened yet.

I'm thinking about buying at Velocity, but need to move in before end of the year. Does anyone know if settlements have started? I've heard they have but can't seem to get confirmation.

Would really like to have a "sit down" style restaurant in Near SE (Clydes- are you listening?).

EE--I am pretty sure that you could get in by the end of the year, if not much sooner. I didn't see too many lights on when I walked by last night, but they say people are moving in now. I think the sales office is open from 11-5 daily.

You can move in and settle by the end of the year, you just have to put 20% down to get financing. Settlements started last week and when I was there on Saturday for the Grand Opening a new resident was moving in. We were told that 14 settlements are scheduled for October. Talk to Vicky in the sales office, she is very helpful and informative and very willing to work with buyers.
We have purchased there but are waiting until it is 50% sold so that we don't have to put 20% down to get financing. We might be neighbors! Good luck!

Thanks. I saw on another post about the grand opening that their condo docs aren't on file with the city yet, so settlements can't happen yet. Any truth to that?

I have no idea, just know that someone did move in on Saturday and they have a bunch scheduled. That would be a question for the sales office-I'm not sure how the condo docs work. Sorry! Please report back if you find anything out!

Six people/units have moved in so far - rumor has it. I'm just sitting and waiting until 51% under contract rolls around (which I find to be a BS law)

CONFIRMED! I too have seen tenants moving in and if you haven't toured the building yet do so! No other place measures up by far! I've been looking for a place to purchase in DC for a couple of years now and the Velocity has really out did its competitors! However, if you disagree please let me know of a better built building/affordability in DC with this kind of location and metro access. I would like to counter.... If I agree Ill buy you a sandwich at Justin's Café. ;)

I just walked by Velocity last night and the space where I believe Justin's Cafe will be (northeast corner of Velocity), has a lot of work to do. If they plan on a Fall opening, they have a ton of work to do. My guess is it won't be open until early 2010.

Totally agree with you! I love the attention to detail in the lobby, common areas, and rooftop pool/deck/grill area (probably my favorite), even the hallways look amazing! I am very impressed! Can't wait to move in!

We are waiting right along with you! Trying to stay positive, the grand opening was packed so that was a good sign! I think now that people can go into the building and see it in person will really help.

Wow. Sounds like a great building. The sales agents should be paying you to sell it. If they were, they'd definitely be over 50% now, instead of barely more than 25% in two years.

That was a joke, right? You're comparing Dominos to this place? Sounds like you have a pretty unsophisticated palate. Dominos is garbage. When you think of wood oven baked pizza think Matchbox, 2 Amy's, etc. This place will be great and I believe it will be a sit-down restaurant. The space is fairly large.

Note: Velocity's condo declaration documents were filed with the city on Oct. 16 (and then revised on Oct. 21 because of a boo-boo). (I wanted to make sure the historical record in this thread is accurate!)
