Page Through from Before to After
I haven't gone anywhere, I just have barely any news to pass along these days. This is the best I can do: * As I tweeted last week, I heard from the owner of the Cornercopia Deli at Third and K, saying that the "wheels are turning a little more slowly" than they had hoped, thanks to red tape. No opening date, but that shouldn't stop you from leaving your thoughts in the comments about what you'd like to see sold in the store--and maybe we can get Mr. Oh himself to say hello... * In Friday's print Washington Business Journal, Missy Frederick writes that sports bar The Greene Turtle is looking to open five more locations by the end of 2009, with two of them in DC, "particularly near Capitol Hill or by one of the college campuses." Hmmm, what neighborhood with a fair amount of already available retail space (and a guaranteed influx of sports fans) is "near Capitol Hill"? (But I'd note that the biggest available retail spaces in Near Southeast, on the ground floors of 100 M and 55 M, are in buildings where the owners [Opus East and Monument Realty] are in rough patches; does that make signing a retail lease less enticing, or more? On the other hand, the ballpark has all that empty retail space along First Street....)

Cornercopia should sell fancy beer.
There's nowhere close to get some good stuff, although I suppose one can now take the Circulator up to Schneider's...

How about pims? They are a European cookie commonly sold at corner markets-- only I prefer the pear version over the orange and raspberry ones. Nobody sells pear pims! CANNOT WAIT for Cornorcopia to open so I don't have to drive all the way to HT anymore... pear pims would definitely sweeten the deal.

Concur with having a good selection of foreign beers. That would definitly keep me coming.
I hope Cornercopia does not become too much of a sandwich shop. Too many of them already...and Subway is 1 block away. They should follow the business model of Marvelous Market and offer higher end quality products.

Cornercopia should sell Cheerwine, a unique cherry soft drink from North Carolina. Cheerwine in glass bottles made with real sugar is best. ( link There are several Virginia distributors that offer Cheerwine, and I believe a few places in the area, like Ray's Hellburger, might already sell it.

I agree that it should not just be a sandwich shop. I think something more along the lines of the market at 4th and East Capitol NE would be perfect -- a great selection of wine and beers, along with some fresh produce, cheeses, and some grocery staple items. Things that you can't get at CVS and that aren't worth the drive to HT.
I'm looking forward to having them as a neighbor.

There was a great little corner market in Richmond that served sushi to go prepared by local restaurant Sticky Rice. Now that we have a Sticky Rice (H St.), I would be thrilled to see something along the same lines. If I want to buy a $4.00 box of dry pasta, I'll go to CVS.
Beer, wine, and indulgent to go food. Now if I can get my singles and my Keno at the LRB, I'll be in heaven.

I just want the place to reflect the feel of the new area. Upscale and trendy!
Holley says: (7/9/09 11:01 AM)
I completely agree with B in DC! The Corner Market on 4th and East Capitol has a wonderful selection of the things mentioned (beer, wine, produce, cheese, bread etc) and the owners are friendly and helpful. I would love to see Cornercopia evolve into an upscale version of it!

I look forward to seeing a gourmet shop with great meats, cheeses, and drinks. also, some good produce would be nice and a great selection of liquor as well.
