4th at River St., Looking West (see more)

With a couple commenters giving the scoop that workers were starting cleanup on the northernmost (and most neglected) block of Canal Park, I had to go see what was up, with camera in hand of course. Here's the batch of photos, and you can use the icons on that page to see them paired with their befores. (You'll also see a few shots of the southernmost block.) While snapping away, I ran into Chris VanArsdale of the Canal Park Development Association, who was also taking photos of the new-look block. He said that the trailers in the middle block should be gone this week, and that the southern block (at M Street) will be sodded while the other two blocks will have grass planted.

Am I seeing that they took (some of) the trees down? I guess (old) trees aren't part of the (new) park?

I thought that they might leave some trees up too. It would have been nice if they had. As of this morning they are all down and in the process of being cleared except for a row that runs along the western side of the block that over the years have grown into the fence. Assuming the fence will be coming down then it's just a matter of time till those trees come down as well.

There's a lot of infrastructure work that's going to need to be done beneath/near the north end of the park site (having to do with preparing for large apartment buildings to be built on either side of the park in coming years), so I imagine that even if the trees had survived this round, they were going to be gone when that happened.

Plus, I wonder if the park's sustainable design (in an ironic twist) would also require all of the land to be dug up to handle all the stormwater management stuff, especially to tie it into those future buildings.

Your canal park overview blurb states park construction may begin early 2011 and your update on selection of the new design firm says their construction may begin early 2010 with completion approx 10 months later probably early 2011. Any true sense of timing on this - would like to begin holding our elected leaders accountable to new time frame.

Blurb is wrong; construction (last I heard) was looking to be started in early 2010 and last 12 months. But it's been a few months since I was told that:
