Some very quick links:
* The Nats unveiled the new statues of Frank Howard, Josh Gibson, and Walter Johnson in the Center Field Plaza at the ballpark yesterday; here's coverage by WTOP, City Paper, WashTimes, and Nats320. But the Post's art critic isn't too impressed.
* The Post's Marc Fisher ruminates on the the futures of both the Nats and the unfinished neighborhood surrounding their new home: "But despite the optimism each new season brings, there is a growing unease, questions about whether fans will really support the team and whether the city's investment will provide the promised returns. Times and moods change." And Fox5 has its own look at the neighborhood in advance of the Nats's home opener.
* In nonballpark news, the city has posted the final draft of its Boathouse Row planning study; you can see more about this easternmost section of Near Southeast here, along with my summary of the last public meeting on the study. (There's a link to this study from the new blog by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.)

The City Paper review, "Nats Reveal Four-Armed Predecessors," is hilarious.

"Amrany is a fabulous man who wore a herringbone jacket and a scarf with a complicated knot."

I'll save my comments until I actually set eyes upon it instead of through critics eyes.

Kinda like a movie, if I ever relied on critics for movies, I'd never see a movie.

The Fox5 article seems inaccurate:

"Some who've already opened restaurants in the neighborhood say business is hurting."

This seems factually impossible, as the number of residents to eat at Five Guys and Subway has only grown and the number of nearby workers has remained static.

What other restaurants have opened? Indeed the opening of a new deli is a bright spot for the neighborhood!

Re: restaurants, given the inability of some local news outlets to understand that the ballpark is not in Southwest, I wouldn't be surprised if this reporter talked to some proprietor down on the Southwest waterfront. There's no restaurants that have even opened in the neighborhood since 2005, when Five Guys opened (if you don't count the food service at the Courtyard by Marriott or the ballpark food)--maybe this is a reference to Cantina Marina's pulling out of the ballpark, though I doubt it.

I walk my dog by Boathouse Row fairly often, and I noticed that the fences and trucks that were at 11th and M are gone. Anyone know what's going on in that space under the freeways?

JD - you're too modest!

From the Marc Fisher article:

"Six buildings have been finished since the first Opening Day at Nationals Park last spring, according to JDLand, an encyclopedic blog by Washington Post computer wiz Jacqueline Dupree that chronicles the transformation of the stadium area."
