 Sliding from Before to After

City Paper's new Best of DC issue is out, and their staff picks include one for Best Local Web Site, where Brightest Young Things is marked as best, but another site gets all the verbiage: "Credit JDLand with thoroughness. If there is a development--however puny, however bureaucratic--regarding the commercial and residential layout of near Southeast D.C., this site may well break the news and will certainly have all the analysis and documents behind it. The site's blog items refresh very regularly and there are cool interactive maps and the like. JDLand, in fact, might just deserve a higher ranking, if only it weren't so nasty." The entry goes on to target my list of highlighted-in-red items on my contact page as the chief example of my nastiness. Perhaps Erik would like to serve as frontline secretary for my inbox without all of those caveats (which I have always considered to be wry, not nasty), and I'd like to think that the people who do contact me via that page get a pretty nice response 99.99% of the time. But oh well. I still very much appreciate the pick.

I've found you to be nothing but nice JD! Keep up the good work!

What is that guy talking about? More CP garbage. Maybe they're mad that you're employed with the Post.

Michael says: (3/26/09 5:24 PM)
LOL @ them... keep up the awesome work

Despite being a gator you are quite nice! :) I feel bad e-mailing you with a question now and then but to get a very nice reply somtimes within minutes doesn't strike me as mean. I can't imagine how many e-mails you must have gotten for you to post "the rules" on your contact page.

Keep up the "mean" work!! :)

Forget what the the City Paper thinks.

The only thing worth reading in there is Savage Love.

PYThings: "Written by the young and urban of DC for the young (at heart) and urban of DC."

Sounds pretentious as hell.

Great that so many folks voted for JD here.

As for 'Erik's' whine... I have found JD to be nothing but professional and friendly and helpful to her readers.

JD - Are they reading the same thing I am? Your caveats are logical, common-sense, wry, and, I'm sure, essential to your sanity and email server capacity. Keep up the humor and the news. Your #1 in my bookmarks! JG

If they want nasty, I can send JD some comments about the crappy architecture, failed urban planning that looks like Crystal City, bad street scape infrastructure design, destruction or ignorance of historic sites, lost opportunities, the bland repetitious design and awful Easter Egg pastel colors of the EYA townhouses (who paints BRICK anyway but dumb newbies), and the overall disaster in the making that everything so far points to with the possible exception of the Yards waterfront.

But I won't.

Instead, I'll just say way to go guys - doing a wonderful job!

JD says: (3/27/09 12:00 PM)
To be fair, Rick, I think they were saying that *I'm* nasty, not my readers. :-)

Don't let the folks at City Paper get you down. You do a great job and deserve all the accolades you can get. You are the example of the involved citizen. Keep it up and I'll keep clicking.

congrats on the accolades JD. your ability to chronicle the neighborhood is fantastic. two thumbs up from your friends in the Penn Quarter. well, six if you want to be all technical about it.

btw, your Google calendar today is showing up in Spanish. I didn't know encouraging second languages was part of your site's agenda.

pqresident says: (3/29/09 9:08 AM)
I've also discovered that angled brackets don't make it through your comment-o-matic thus the second para in my prior comment had a few grins thrown in for extra special/visual effect not conveyed using words alone.

JD says: (3/29/09 9:28 AM)
Hmmm, pq, are you sure you didn't throw back one too many margaritas last night? :-) I'm seeing the Google Calendar stuff in English, both in IE and Chrome.

Am checking on the angle brackets stuff, though I have it coded to escape angle brackets.

Last but not least, thanks for the kind words. And congrats to you (and everyone else) on making the Washingtonian list.

JD says: (3/29/09 9:30 AM)
Ah, fixed the angle brackets stuff.
