The Post's Marc Fisher writes for Thursday's paper about the behind the scenes battle between the city and the Lerners about whether Nationals Park was completed on schedule, with the owners pointing to the $100,000-per-day damages owed to them according to the stadium lease agreement if construction was not finished on time. Quoting: "But nearly three weeks after the stadium played host to its first game, the Nationals were still demanding $100,000 a day because, among other items, the team offices at the new ballpark were not yet completely ready. The city conceded that the offices weren't done as soon as the ballpark itself, but sports commission chief executive Gregory O'Dell reminded the Nationals that the offices make up less than 3 percent of the stadium project. He called that delay a "minor inconvenience" and noted that the District allowed the team to stay at its old RFK Stadium offices rent-free."
In other ballpark-related news, reader D. reports that the valet parking that was launched a few weeks ago at the Southeastern Bus Garage at Half and M has gotten cheaper, now down to $40 from $50.
UPDATE: Tim Lemke has more on the $100k/day issue, saying that it does appear to revolve around the admin building. He also has a bit about the upgrading of some of the stadium bonds from BBB+ to AA, which I'm sure is faaaabulous!

Maybe Nats fans should sue the Lerners for damages because of the crummy baseball team they have fielded. Seems to me, instead of spending money on attorney fees going after the D.C. government, the Lerners' money would be better spent hiring some marketing people to devise ways to fill up that white elephant stadium known as Nationals Park. It's embarrassing to see how empty the place is during games. Oh yeah, that's right - the Nats stink! The Lerners are nothing more that typical greedy sports owners. The people of D.C. deserve better.

The Lerners were given a gift by a city that could ill aford to spent over $600 M on a stadium while kids in their public schools want for many basic items.

I am in my 4th year with season tickets and am weary waiting for the Lerners to open their wallets and bring a proven hitter to the Nationals.

It is petty for them to demand $100K a day from the City.

What is the news on the Potomac Avenue retail spaces that are built into the park? I usually walk in the center field gate, so I don't head down that way for games.

Are the spaces built out? Are there any leases yet? Should we expect sidewalk cafes, eclectic sports art shops, or something else? I'd head over there for a pre or post game beer once they open.

PS: I found an Obscured view seat (which my company bought for half a season) Section 204, Row P, Seat 15. Big steel support beam blocks the view of the plate. I told my company I'd be happy to call the team for different seats.
