Monday's Metro section of the Post has "Beside the Diamond, a Lump of Coal", bringing readers up to speed on the Florida Rock concrete-plant parcel just south of the ballpark. Nothing in it that folks wandering through here on a regular basis won't already know (you can read the piles of entries I've posted on the project over the past five years for additional details, including my post about last month's surprise preliminary approval of the latest design, and my project page has plenty of renderings and photos).

Is it just me, but doesn't the Florida Rock plan seem to be craming a lot of stuff into a relatively small space? I don't suppose there is any hope that the lot could be left open as a public space...

Don't forget that the western portion of the Florida Rock site is currently taken up by the northern portion of the Douglass Bridge, and so the last part of the project can't be built until the new bridge is finished and the old one is demolished....

FRP = In over their heads!

When you look at the list of properties the Florida Rock folks have built and managed in the past, you can easily understand why "Riverfront" has taken them sooooo long to develop: they have zero expertise! The only other properties in their portfolio are suburban office park warehouses! They've never done anything remotely close to this upscale/large scale project. And woe to the developer who is going thru the D.C. approval process for the first time. It could take another 10 years for FRP to learn the ropes, whereas one of the established 'big boy' developers would have broken ground by now.
The Nats might as well put little cement trucks inside their curly W logo...because that ugly cement plant will be there for a long long time to come.
