 Sliding from Before to After

After writing about the revitalization of Capper/Carrollsburg a few weeks ago, the New York Times now looks at Near Southeast/Ballpark District/Capitol Riverfront: "But everyone agrees that the change in the neighborhood in the 22 months since work began on the 41,000-seat stadium has been astounding. In what was an urban wasteland of trash-strewn lots, sex clubs, and taxi and auto repair shops, developers have invested in new offices, condominiums, rental apartments, stores and restaurants. This undertaking is still very much a work in progress, but that progress is palpable in the sights and sounds of jackhammers, scaffolds, bulldozers and other heavy construction equipment. Fenced-off areas and hard-hat crews are everywhere." It's a pretty good overview for folks who don't know what's been happening in the area, but JDLand readers will be familiar with most of the descriptions and players. If you're wandering onto this site after reading the Times article, looking for more information (and pictures!) about the changes, just start clicking on the map at right to see what's been happening in these here parts.

JD,

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Bud Selig and the next commissioner read your blog.

I think MLB will award the Nationals the All-Star Game once JDLand is simmering with all the new places.

Other teams are ahead of us, but hopefully we can get it around 2014, 2015.

too bad the article calls the Anacostia River the area's "southern edge", when that is not at all the case and only serves to advance incorrect stereotypes about people and places east/south of the Anacostia.

JD says: (4/16/08 9:31 AM)
Weeeelllll..... You're not trying to say that the Ballpark District crosses the river, are you?

DG-rad says: (4/16/08 11:29 AM)
you're right. I was -for whatever reason, probably because I am overly focused on Anacostia- reading it as "this is where the DC area stops." :)

Edward J. Cunningham says: (4/16/08 7:23 PM)
Well, at one time the Anacostia river WAS the border for the CITY of Washington, even though Anacostia has been part of D.C. since 1791. This is why the battle of Fort Stevens is listed in history books as being "just outside Washington" when it is clearly within the D.C. limits.

But you do have a point--many people don't think Anacostia is part of the "real" Washington. Aside from cleaning up the Anacostia River, what is the best way to improve the area east of the river as a whole?

Ah yes - the *good old days*! (-:
