 Sliding from Before to After

Wednesday's Post has a column by Tom Boswell ("Nationals Park: Best of a Bad Lot") listing the myriad problems he sees with the ballpark and its surroundings, with Opening Day now just a month away. The Navy Yard subway station. The parking situation. The Florida Rock site ("an enormous and inexcusable 5.8-acre eyesore" that will be "sitting there all season, damaging the river views from all the ramps to the first base upper deck"). (He does mention that fences to obscure the view at ground level will be going up, which I posted about a few days ago.) The WASA site (which "would be the Most Unsightly Thing Near Any Big League Park if Florida Rock and Gravel hadn't already retired the trophy.") The Monument Half Street site, where he says "construction has stopped." The fact that city views are only available in the cheap seats.
But he ends with a stab at optimism: "Someday, the Anacostia riverfront will amaze us, just maybe not as soon as we hoped. When it comes to fulfilling huge civic dreams, what's a few years, more or less. In for a dime, in for a decade. "
On the other hand, the article confirms that the garages, which have long been a focal point of much complaining, will indeed be covered, as has long been shown in the renderings, with "league logos, replicas of the 'Washington All-Stars' from the right field scoreboard in RFK as well as colorful baseball-themed ads."

i mean, really, what the hell does he want? capitalism will take its time making over the area around the stadium, but, like the area around the verizon center, it didn't (and won't) change overnight.

yeah, a lot of what's around the park is ugly...just going to have to suck it up...

Here is hoping the city can start on the Poplar Point development and stadium (with parking!), and hopefully a pedestrian bridge so folks can make the easy trip (ala RFK) down I-295, and park there, then run back across the bridge, start yer engines and be back in Old Town in 15 minutes, just like RFK (maybe add 5 minutes for that walk across the river). With the loss of tax reciepts from the falling house market, however, it might be a long, long time.

I'm not really sure how development around the ballpark could go any faster than it already is. What is he judging it against...Dubai?

Who is Boswell writing to these days?

For those on the web and in the blogosphere, everything he talked about in his article has already been fully discussed.

By the way, isnt the Near Southeast redevelopment significantly ahead of the pace of what took place around the Verizon Center?

Bob Hall says: (2/27/08 8:24 AM)
Has construction of Monument's Half Street Project really stopped, as he says? If that's true, that's a big deal!

JD says: (2/27/08 9:19 AM)
I'm waiting to hear from Monument as to whether or not it's true.

Tony Corbo says: (2/27/08 7:22 PM)
Why has he done a 180 from his November 14 , 2007 column?

Tom Boswell just noticed that there is a cement plant next to the ballpark? And that there is construction all around? Where has he been?
