A few items for people who aren't currently glued to their TVs or Twitter accounts:
* WHALEY'S CLOSING: Tom Sietsema passed along in today's chat that Whaley's will be closing "before next month," 3 1/2 years after it arrived in the Lumber Shed at the Yards between Osteria Morini and Agua 301. (UPDATE: This statement from Whaley's says that their last day is Nov. 24 except for private events through the end of the year.) But...
* NEW RESTAURANT COMING: Whaley's will be replaced by the new restaurant by Maydan chefs Gerald Addison and Chris Morgan, which Sietsema teased a few weeks ago. No hints yet on what the "concept" will be. The new operation gets the keys to the space on Jan. 1, Sietsema says, and are aiming for a spring launch.
* ENCHANT: As if Nationals Park hasn't been enchanting enough this year, the huge Enchant Christmas experience begins its run on Thursday, Nov. 22, all the way through Dec. 29. It includes "the world's largest light maze," an ice skating trail, a Christmas market, and "seasonal" food and drink offerings. And Santa. Who I'm sure will be getting a lot of requests for stocking stuffers named Rendon and Strasburg. Tickets are on sale, with prices varying based on the time and date of your choosing.

That makes two restaurants that have come and gone before I was able to step food inside (the other being 100 montaditos). Any sense that slow business was the culprit for Whaleys?

jdc, I have to imagine slow business was the culprit with Whaleys. It's too bad. I thought it was a decent spot, but I saw it as more of a novelty place to go if I needed a place for a drink or a snack between meals rather than as a place to go for a "real" lunch or dinner. I know that's not a ringing endorsement, but I thought it made a nice contributions to the neighborhood's offerings. Looking forward to seeing what the Maydan chefs bring to the table!

All restaurants are seasonal to some extent but to me Whaley's felt like more of a summer destination than other places. I am sad to see it go but happy that it won't just be a vacant space.

JDC-
Montaditos closed because although their food was better than okay, their staff refused to ever seem interested in serving customers. I went many times and even while sitting at the bar had to distract the bartender from his soccer game to get refills on beers. I was sad but 0% shocked to see them close.

Whaleys was 100% a summer place, and if you want oysters, there are other places nearby to go to (wharf). Will be interesting to see if the rosé bar continues. Walking by, the rose bar would be packed, but never whaleys, even while agua, osteria, and winery were packed. Again, 0% shocked they closed.

I had a weird experience at Whaley's and never went back. My wife and I ordered the seafood tower for two and the server promised us we'd be satisfied with it. We liked it but we were still hungry. The server dropped the check off without asking us if we wanted anything else. We ended up going next door to Osteria Morini and sharing a pasta and desert to finish the meal. Maybe I should have gone back, dunno. But looking forward to seeing what the Maydan folks come up with.

Liking the food but still hungry was 100% Whaley's... That was my experience as well. Tasty but for that much $ you'd like to not leave still hungry and wanting a 2nd meal.

@jsh: I, too, loved the food at Montaditos, but I always assumed it closed because the staff treated the place as a sanctuary for roaches and tipped them off whenever the exterminator’s truck pulled up out front.

I swore that place off multiple times after encountering unwanted six-legged company. I’d stay away, start jones-ing for a favorite sammitch, and return a few months later. Only to encounter the great-great-great great-grandchildren of the critters that drove me away the last time.

Finally, with the help of a support group, I embraced the No Second Chance With Visible Roaches Restaurant Lifestyle and found the strength to patronize only establishments that GAF about sanitation.

Went to ABC Pony on Saturday for a coffee. Really nice in there, coffee was great, and the little cookie stick was the most perfectly paired treat for coffee, crispy but within 2 seconds was completely soaked.

Way back when we were young, the “chiller plant” site was seen as a potential condopalooza. But apartments are nothing to sneeze at. Welcome to the neighborhood.

I’m going to lobby the development partners to give it an appropriate name like The Dupree or The Jacqueline.

Huh. Whaley's never had a proper kitchen setup from the get-go; there was hardly any back-of-house space there. Wonder what Addison & Morgan, who are used to that monster fire at Maydan, can do with the space. It was early to the raw-bar scene, but now there are multiple competitors on either side and with better visibility.

100 Montaditos ran into problems at the corporate level, which this location couldn't have outrun -- however well or poorly it did.

@JDC - In the actual neighborhood probably just Whole Foods or Harris Teeter, but the Wiseguys location also has a gelato/pastry shop in it (I forget the name). District Donuts are up a few blocks at the southern end of Barracks Row.

What's the deal with the makeshift front desk at Guild (a guy with a laptop at a folding table near the door)? I always thought it was ill-conceived to have a building of that size with no staff but there were also lots of rumblings that Brookfield is all about cost cutting. I guess they already realized it was a bad idea.
