Sliding from Before to After
The doors open officially on Thursday (Oct. 18) at 9 am, but on Monday night there was a preview party to whet the neighborhood's appetite for its newest tenant, the "South Capitol Hill" (#SoCHill) Whole Foods at the corner of New Jersey Avenue and H Street, SE. This has been a looooooooong time in coming--just a smidge over 10 years, to be exact. While I could write all sorts of words about all of the store's offerings--the coffee and juice bar, the wine bar, the local foods, the large prepared foods section, the fish and cheese mongering, and much more--I think soon enough everyone will be able to see it for themselves, and so I'll just be content with slapping these photos up for about 60 hours of pining. Except to mention the quinoa. There's quinoa. Lots of quinoa.

Whole Foods, Schmole Foods. What‘s the latest on the movie theater?
Lambau88 says: (10/16/18 7:37 AM)
Looks great. Cheese mongering? Such a thing exists??? Any idea on regular hours?
smitty2k1 says: (10/16/18 8:38 AM)
Do I remember reading that there is going to be a sandwich shop opening inside of whole foods or in that same building? Need something to replace the Taylor Gourmet hole in my heart.
MarkB says: (10/16/18 8:50 AM)
Any news on when the Chase branch down the street will be opening
malatesta says: (10/16/18 8:52 AM)
There's a fast casual type situation inside, but they literally ahve two sandwiches wings and fries and that's it. I think I saw pics on JD's Twitter?
JD says: (10/16/18 10:39 AM)
Yeah, there's not a sandwich shop. It's the Philly Wing Bar, but it's from a Top Chef contestant so it's trying a bit too hard.
malatesta says: (10/16/18 10:42 AM)
I mean, it is a whole foods, so trying too hard is like the whole deal, right?
Edna says: (10/16/18 12:08 PM)
$5.99 / lb. for quinoa? Ouch. And I'm not one of those Whole-Foods-is-soooo-expensive people, but that seems really pricey.
Ampersand says: (10/16/18 1:28 PM)
JD I'm duly impressed by your ability to predict the location of the eventual WF that long ago!
Hastings says: (10/16/18 7:21 PM)
I noticed two bright orange signs on the WF front doors regarding a hearing on December 1 for a license to serve alcohol. Does that mean the store will not be serving beer or wine at the in-store bar when it opens? So much for our office’s plans to hold a happy hour there next week!
DCCyclist365 says: (10/17/18 9:46 AM)
The Whole Foods on H St has $5 beer and wine on tap all day, every day. Do you know if this location will offer the same?
JD says: (10/17/18 9:58 AM)
I imagine they have a provisional license in advance of the hearing. They were serving alcohol at the preview.
Don't know the prices. We'll find out soon!
griffey82 says: (10/18/18 12:42 AM)
someone above asked about the movie theater. Rumor has it they lost the tenant bc it took DC Water so long to tuen over the parcel. Now they’re looking to ahrink it from 16 screens to 7 screens ans get a new operator in.
jdc says: (10/18/18 9:12 AM)
Not to rain on THE DAY of ALL DAYS with other news, but demolition has begun at old GSA warehouse.
JD says: (10/18/18 9:48 AM)
There are indeed premade sandwiches. And everything else. It's quite something. Pics: link
JES says: (10/18/18 1:22 PM)
Just went for lunch. Chef Kwame is there all day serving up Philly Wing Fry orders. Also, I've never seen a grocery store that crowded before, lol. link
walt says: (10/18/18 3:50 PM)
Shrinking the movie theater from 16 to 7 screens would be ideal! 16 Screens is too much.
JES says: (10/18/18 6:18 PM)
Oh yeah, and uhh... given the absolute mess that the NJ & I intersection was today, we now officially need a traffic light there.
202_cyclist says: (10/19/18 11:32 AM)
This was lost among all of the excitement surrounding the Whole Foods opening (The Store That Shall Be Named) but I saw someone from the BID leading a tour of approximately thirty people in suits around 2:30 PM on Monday. Perhaps Jeff Bezos wants Amazon II to be close to the new Whole Foods. link
202_cyclist says: (10/19/18 12:37 PM)
The Hill Rag has some very exciting news for the neighborhood-- a two-story bakery is coming to Half Street. link
GarfieldPark says: (10/19/18 1:00 PM)
In addition to a traffic light at NJ/I, they should think about a crosswalk on NJ Ave by the Whole Foods area. They used to have one there, I'm wondering why they took it away?
Packinblackandred says: (10/19/18 1:26 PM)
@GarfieldPark I think they only put it up there for when the Whole Foods construction blocked off the east sidewalk. I do think it should stay though.
JD says: (10/19/18 1:30 PM)
What also needs to happen is that the fences blocking the Garfield Park underpass need to go away.
And the more I look at the completed western end of the tunnel project, the more I think that there was an opportunity lost to request that the tunnel be extended to New Jersey Avenue, to allow for a more free flow of foot traffic to and from Garfield Park and H Street. (and that little closed off section of Virginia Avenue, should it ever reopen)
B in DC says: (10/19/18 2:34 PM)
JD, several folks requested that in the EIS process but were told that it was outside the scope of the project and would not be considered. I agree that would have been a great outcome.
