Sliding from Before to After
 * AMAZON HQ2: Jonathan O'Connell reports on the announcement yesterday that DC has included Southeast DC in the four sites it plans to pitch to Amazon* in the company's quest for a location for its "HQ2," a second headquarters that will need up to 8 million (!) square feet of space. It would require the cobbling together of multiple parcels in Near Southeast, Buzzard Point, and Poplar Point, almost none of which are currently controlled by the DC government. Amazon is expected to make a decision amongst the many cities putting themselves in contention in 2018. For more information on the #ObviouslyDC pitch, go to AlexaWhyDC.com. (And yes, the movie theater site is among the highlighted parcels. But remember, this is the city highlighting which parcels are still available, not what might necessarily come to pass.) * BOWER SALES: Readers report receiving e-mails from PN Hoffman saying that the sales center for The Bower is expected to open on Sunday, Oct. 29, with some "preview appointments" available for scheduling in the time span between now and then. This is the 138-unit condo project that has been under construction for what seems like forever on the southeast corner of 4th and Tingey at the Yards. The official web site now has floor plans available (which I think I already mentioned, but whatevs). * CAVA PROGRESS: In response to a Twitter query last week, Cava Grill says that "they are working hard" to get their new location on M Street between Half and Cushing ready to go. "Stay tuned for updates." * CONSTRUCTION UPDATES: The JDLand camera has been lazy of late. But, given the weather forecast, I expect that to be rectified this weekend. * Full disclosure: I work for the Washington Post, now owned by Jeff Bezos, Amazon's grand poobah. But Amazon does not own the Post, it must always be emphasized.

Be on the look out for a new eatery in the neighborhood too...it's a secret. Oath Craft Pizza (www.oathpizza.com) will be moving in. link

Thank you for the updates-- it is nice not having the reminder about the playoffs every time I check the site. I am looking forward to Rasa opening. We tried the food they were sampling at the Rooftop Hop event back in June and it was delicious.

FromTheTurret - Do they name-drop this neighborhood later in the article? Only Fairfax County is mentioned in the part I can read without creating an account. Sounds tasty, though also seems like it would compete pretty directly with All Purpose (which can't open soon enough).
FromTheTurret says: (10/17/17 2:54 PM)
They won't be a direct competitor to All Purpose. They are fast casual but will have beer and wine. Their footprint is much smaller than All Purpose...more like a Taylor Gourmet or Roti size location but not on 1st Street. No, the article does not name drop the neighborhood but another source did.

The Bower Units will be ready for move-in around the end of 2018 and early 2019. If you call and ask they will provide you with information regarding pricing on specific units. Condo fees are $.80 a sq foot. That seems high to me as this building won't have a pool.
Ampersand says: (10/17/17 3:42 PM)
Thanks for the additional info. I will gladly accept any fast casual pizza place that isn't an &pizza.

JD, thanks for the updates, and I hope you enjoy the time outdoors this coming weekend! Re DC's proposal to Amazon, hopefully Amazon knows the "transit oriented" proposal only works during Metro's operating hours. To stay open late, Amazon will have to get Exelon to foot the bill. But if Amazon expects to occupy 500,000 to 1 million square feet of office space by late 2019, it sure doesn't seem like the "Anacostia Riverfront" option will be suitable by then. I mean, the movie theater surely won't be finished!
RMP says: (10/17/17 5:41 PM)
The coming soon paper is up for Willow and it's going in on the Water St. side of Arris next to Schilling.

There is a notice on the window of the vacant building at 716 L St SE (i.e. the building right across the street from the blue castle and next to the Brig) that a fourth floor addition and a penthouse is planned. I have thought that the ground floor there would be great for a restaurant, with the wide sidewalks. There is quite a lot of residential construction now in the lower Barracks Row corridor, with this, 816 and 820 Potomac Ave, and the building on the corner of 8th and L St.

Signage for Cava is up....it's weird though because it says Cava above one door and just V above another.

80 cents per square foot??? Our particular unit in Velocity is around 52 or 53 cents. Yeesh.
SWSE says: (10/19/17 3:16 PM)
I'm surprised no one has commented on the Amazon proposal. While I think it's a long shot for DC/Cap Riverfront to get it, I generally think it's a terrible idea- it seems like it would take a ton of space off the table for community amenities (such as the movie theater, other restaurants or retail, etc), and bring a lot more traffic and congestion, drive up the cost of living even more, etc. Am I missing something? What are the advantages of Amazon moving in?
JD says: (10/19/17 3:20 PM)
While not speaking of the movie theater, it is likely that any office buildings built here would be required (or at least highly pressured) to have ground-floor retail. Certainly it would be required in any of the Yards parcels, and in the Florida Rock one, and at 25 M.
I think people aren't really talking about it because it doesn't seem highly likely that the neighborhood will be chosen, given what a cobbling-together of space it would have to be. Then again, neither did choosing South Capitol Street as the spot for a new baseball stadium.
JD says: (10/19/17 3:25 PM)
Also, as for "bringing a lot more traffic and congestion, driving up the cost of living" etc., every one of those parcels is going to be developed at some point anyway, whether Amazon arrives or not. But what it would do is change a number of parcels (the ones south of N and east of 1st) from planned residential to office. Otherwise, that huge empty space at 1st and M is already planned to be hundreds of thousands of square feet of office. 25 M is planned to be office. One of the Florida Rock buildings is planned to be office.
And I guarantee you that those lots won't all remained undeveloped just because Amazon doesn't come here.

Reality is setting in for the Bridge Park, as it is being scaled back a bit. link

Bridge park's original design was seven times more load than the piers could handle. Lol.
Also, only $15m raised. It ain't gonna be built by 2019.
202_cyclist says: (10/19/17 4:24 PM)
Hyperloop or the Amazon HQ in JD Land both seem more realistic than the Bridge Park. I say that as someone who thinks the Bridge Park is a cool idea.

Any news on Chipotle? Did I miss something? As for Amazon, yeah, better bet for the Hill East area I think. Or even better in Fairfax County.

Agora/WF is on verge of adding lights on roof top of building. Looks good. Fencing is also up on phase 3 of that project. Getting to work.
202_cyclist says: (10/23/17 3:24 PM)
Speaking of Whole Foods, do you know when that little street adjacent to the building will open? It looks like the sidewalk is landscaped and there will be a whole new sidewalk to leave Lime Bikes/Spin/Mobikes on, as well as for neighborhood dogs to relieve themselves.
202_cyclist says: (10/23/17 3:26 PM)
Also, it is SWTLQTC territory and not JD Land but the scoreboard was recently installed at Audi Field. It looks like there has been considerable progress on the new stadium.
