Judging by the packed house at 11:45 Memorial Day morning, very few of you need me to tell you that Slipstream Coffee and Libations has now opened its second DC location, in the ground floor of the ORE82 apartment building at New Jersey Avenue and I Street, SE.
My lack of interest in coffee and coffee-like beverages is well documented by this point, so I will just leave it to the JDLand Commentariat to weigh in with their opinions. But it is always nice to welcome a new retail outpost to the neighborhood.
(And I got a nice chuckle out of the line of people marching directly from next-door neighbor Orangetheory Fitness right into Slipstream. Hope they burned a lot of calories first!)
Slipstream is just the first of a mini-wave of arrivals, with reports via the Commentariat that the Salt Line is apparently coming this week and Bethesda Bagels is in Any Minute Now mode as well.
Unfortunately, there is also apparently a farewell, as reader JH_105 reported that a sign at the register says that Congressional Cleaners, in the ground floor of Capitol Hill Tower, is closing permanently on June 14. which is just two weeks short of the 10th anniversary of its opening. Which would also make it two weeks short of the 10th anniversary of it getting robbed just a few hours after it opened. Things were different then.
(PS: I'm still very much in and out. Patience requested, noted, and truly appreciated.)

Kind of surprised to hear that the cleaners are closing. I used them for years before I moved out of the neighborhood. Seems like with an influx of residents, the neighborhood could support a couple more dry cleaners.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of the buildings in the neighborhood list dry cleaning pick-up/delivery service among their amenities. Most people probably prefer avoiding the hassle of going to the dry cleaners' location. That said, having competition and also local tailoring services is always a good thing.

@Daedam is right. I've never used my building's dry cleaning service, since Wells is literally steps away, but plenty of others seem to use it all the time.

I was also surprised to see the cleaners is closing. I'm also disappointed - they've done a good job on my dry cleaning as well as alterations, and I've found them to very pleasant in the process. Hopefully their next venture is a success.

Retail leases are typically for...10 years. So, it is no surprise to me that Congressional Cleaners us closing. Their lease terms 10 years ago were probably much more attractive than the terms they were recently offered for a new lease.

It's a good point about the lease terms. Nevertheless, although I'm sure a renewal would be less favorable than the initial lease from ten years ago, I'm still a little surprised that it would be a total deal breaker. According to the lady at Congressional Cleaners I spoke to, they aren't planning to move to another location - just closing up shop. I was curious to learn more, but she seemed genuinely disappointed about the impending closure, so I decided not to pry further.

@dude the taste of coffee is hampered by the fact that 300 of the 631 chemicals that combine to form its complex aroma are wiped out by saliva, causing the flavour to change from what we smell :(

I'm not a huge coffee drinker either, but I definitely like cocktails, sandwiches, brunch, etc, so I'm excited to try Slipstream - their menu looks good.

I ducked into Slipstream yesterday late morning to unwind a little bit. Not a coffee person either, but I had hot tea which hit the spot on a dreary cool day. I LOVE the space, and the staff was extremely friendly. I'll definitely be back for food and cocktails, which seemed reasonably priced and potentially delicious. And for the atmosphere, which was great. I hope they do well.

Bethesda Bagels looks on the verge of opening, based on walking by it this morning. I'm pumped.

In other news, there's apparently a concert in Canal park tonight? I only found out because my favorite food truck tweeted about it. link

202, I'm partially with you on the surprise about the lukewarm feelings on coffee. I like it fine (and drink at least one cup per day), but the law of diminishing returns kicks in very fast for me, which is to say that I don't see the value in any of the fancy lattes or pour-over places. Once I'm paying more than a couple of bucks for it, I'd just assume kick in a few more and get a beer.

@conngs0--- I don't consider myself fully awake until I have the coffee jitters. I agree with you, I wouldn't pay more than $2 for a cup of coffee yet I readily pay $7 - $8 for a beer.

I enjoy my morning coffee - 2 to 3 cups. And on many days, especially in the summer, I enjoy another iced coffee around 3. Boy, I miss Dunkin Donuts.

JD, what's your position on Chick-fil-A Coca-Cola compared to McDonald's? I had the opportunity to stop by Chick-fil-A during a Memorial Day weekend road trip and found their fountain soda to be quite refreshing. Thank goodness the stuff in the bottles and cans doesn't taste as good or I'd definitely be in trouble!! Granted, it's not as good as taking a stroll to the old I Street McD's....

Bethesda Bagels definitely looks ready to open within a week or two. I had incorrectly thought it included the bay to its left, which it does not. This is definitely a grab-and-go location. Also, grabbed an iced coffee from Slip Stream. So far, pleased. Going to try some food next to see how its kitchen is doing this early.

I think the Chik-Fil-A version is wholly acceptable. Lots of carbonation and nice and cold when dispensed, which are the two things that I think make the McDonald's version so wonderful.

Huge tubs of Diet Coke are extremely important for my long hours of driving around this great land of ours (especially now, when I don't have anyone to spell me). I just want to know how come no one is offering two- or three-foot-long straws so that I don't have to pick up a 32-ounce cup while I'm driving.

JD, they totally do make these! Marketed primarily to people who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility, but go for it on your road trips!

@will is that science or alternative fact? If it's science I guess I need a saliva reducer!

For the record I pretty much only drink tap water, OJ or seltzer water, so I can't see paying for any other types of drinks, but I'm clearly not the right audience.

not a scientific journal lol but i've seen it in a couple different places, it has to do with the Aldehydes, apparently super delicate aromas that can be lost by oxidation, grinding of beans or saliva.

Had the privilege of being the first party seated for dinner at The Salt Line on June 1. Enjoyed a great meal. Opted for an outside table on what turned out to be a perfect summer evening. When it's not being terribly unfair, life can be awfully damned good.
