Page Through from Before to After
* HOMICIDE: The neighborhood's first second* non-ghaslty-workplace-mass-shooting homicide since March 25, 2004 happened on Sunday, when neighborhood resident Anthony Young was shot to death in the 600 block of L Street, SE; a woman with him was wounded. Police charged Babajide Pittman, 31, with second-degree murder while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon, and said that the the shooting was a dispute between two people who knew each other. ANC 6D Commissioner Meredith Fascett wrote about Young, saying that he was "working to mentor neighborhood kids and had planned to volunteer at the Community Center." ( WaPo) UPDATE (VERSION 2): *Originally this update was to say that there were in fact two homicides in the neighborhood in 2016, but after seeing the second one listed as being in the 1000 block of 8th St., SE, I misremembered it as the shooting that happened in the barber shop there. After being corrected in the comments, I went looking, and found this murder from May, but it is described as having happened north of the freeway at the time, but is now in the MPD crime stats as being south of the freeway. * MORE CRIME: The actual map part of my big crime database has probably been busted for months, but no one's mentioned it so no one must ever look there. But it's fixed now. (If you follow me on Twitter and feel like these tidbits all seem familiar, you are correct! If you don't follow me on Twitter, or don't ever scroll through the Twitter box on the right side of the JDLand home page, you are missing out on what is still a pretty active news feed. It's a way for me to keep the info flowing when I don't have time to post. So, keep an eye on it...)

Insignia on M is really coming along now. The new streetscape going in looks very nice and quite distinctive, esp. the pavement.
202_cyclist says: (11/30/16 1:43 PM)
It's outside of the greater JD metropolis but SWTLQTC reports that the U.S. Dept. of Labor might relocate its headquarters to the parcel on So. Capitol St and M St, SW, where the 7-11 currently is. This would be a win-win, as there would be more jobs and development along the South Capitol St corridor and we would get rid of the 7-11. link
202_cyclist says: (11/30/16 1:45 PM)
I am glad there were no serious injuries with the car that flipped on its side last night but one can't help but wonder whether the driver was texting and driving. Auto fatalities were up significantly last year, in large part because of distracted driving.
JD says: (11/30/16 1:54 PM)
I really thought Spooky Park was going to have the inside track for that Dept of Labor bid. Certainly enough space.
Ampersand says: (11/30/16 2:24 PM)
Don't know if this was already linked, but apparently a gluten-free vegan raw food place is coming to Arris: link
202_cyclist says: (11/30/16 2:45 PM)
@Ampersand: There is also a fresh juice place at the City Center development. I think my next job will be selling $12 fruit smoothies to people leaving yoga and spinning class.
RMP says: (11/30/16 3:11 PM)
Looks like Forest City has hired a market research company to focus group The Yards brand. I signed up to participate. We'll see if they pick me.
conngs0 says: (11/30/16 3:14 PM)
Interesting how the WBJ article on the Labor Deportment relocation indicated that the 7-11 site is considered by the GSA to be in the “Capitol Riverfront". So perhaps they meant to consider the Spooky Park all along! I hope either site winds up getting that tenant.
jdc says: (11/30/16 3:49 PM)
Frankly I'd prefer a non-federal tenant for that site because I think it would be more pedestrian friendly that way. The ever increasing security for any type of federal building is off putting.
bmooremsu says: (11/30/16 5:59 PM)
Looks like there is finally a bit of movement on Showplace Icon project. As you all may know, DC Water continues to occupy the plot where the movie theater is supposed to go. However, the District recently identified a suitable location for DC Water to move which is a critical step before construction can begin. Apparently, several hurdle continue to stand in the way of the project. link
MJM says: (11/30/16 11:41 PM)
Jdc - got an example of security restricting or off-puting? DDOT is in our area and I enjoy waking down that sidewalk and they have a great outdoor museum. Why would DoL be a negative?
jdc says: (12/1/16 8:21 AM)
MJM - I even find DDOT a bit off putting. Guard houses, security gates and those petal car ramming devices. I'd prefer not to have those. DOL, combined with DOT, would also create a huge zone of 9-5 'activity' and then massive quiet on weekends and evenings. With First St. and Yards Park being activated for almost constant action, it would seem a waste to lose a big chunk of that property to a government facility. I think the SW property is perfect because, like DOT, it can spur development along Capitol St, remove an eyesore, and it's not a parcel that is too far removed from all of the action in SE - especially once Capitol is turned into a blvd and not a sunken highway.
jdc says: (12/1/16 8:22 AM)
Leaving work yesterday Half St. was temporarily blocked because another shipping container was on its way off the site.
Shogungts says: (12/1/16 9:29 AM)
How do you flip a sedan on small local street? I see some (minimal) damage to the front driver side and maybe it hit one of the parked cars (can't see damage, but could be blocked in the picture), but I am still struggling to see how that car could flip in that area w/o hitting something like a curb which doesn't seem like it happened based on where the cars are parked.
Shogungts says: (12/1/16 9:33 AM)
I agree with JDC - I work in L'enFant Plaza which is almost entirely Federal Gov't offices and the place is dead by 5PM. What vibrant parts of the city have lots of Federal buildings?
202_cyclist says: (12/1/16 10:41 AM)
@MJM-- just to clarify, it is the US DOT that has the Transportation Walk. @Shogungts--- In fairness to L'Enfant, it is changing a bit with several hotels in the area and the Spy Museum moving to L'Enfant Plaza.
Shogungts says: (12/1/16 10:47 AM)
@202 - maybe the Wharf will change L'Enfant, but I assure that this place is still dead after 5. My fear with the Wharf and Spy Museum is that the place goes from gov't graveyard to giant tourist trap, but I will still take the latter over what it is today.
RMP says: (12/1/16 11:07 AM)
Anyone know what's up with the holiday sculptures around the Yards? The one in front of Philz kind of looks like something where Santa could be setup for photos.
202_cyclist says: (12/1/16 2:01 PM)
On the subject of fed office buildings, this seems like a great deal! linkWe should bid on this and make the JD Land World Headquarters.
Ampersand says: (12/1/16 3:57 PM)
@Shogungts - The flipped sedan hit a parked car HARD, hard enough to very severely damage the parked car. Parked car had its front drivers-side tire basically torn off and was pushed backwards about 4 feet into the car parked behind it (which had its front end crumpled as a result). If you want to gawk a bit, both damaged cars were still in place this morning, a couple doors down from Cornercopia on 3rd. My roommates and I did some theorizing, and we think the driver may have taken a right turn off of K St too fast, slid on the wet road, and flipped when their front rode up the hood/front end of the parked car.
Ampersand says: (12/1/16 4:03 PM)
(trying to attach a not-very-good photo of the parked car, maybe it'll work)
Shogungts says: (12/1/16 4:07 PM)
@Ampersand - thanks, that makes a lot more sense. Seems like they would have to have blown through the stop sign as well then. @RMP - I haven't been down that way since the sculptures went up, but I am guessing they might be related to this from the Post: "Saturday-Sunday: For a dash of holiday romance and perhaps an Instagram-able moment, head to Mistletoe at the Yards. The Southeast waterfront area will feature eight giant mistletoe sculptures spread throughout the park and neighborhood, featuring ice cream cones, wine corks and more. And there's a map if you want to plan the perfect mistletoe walk. The Mistletoe installation will be live through Dec. 27, and admission is free."

And that blurb in the post linked to the Yards DC website... holy terrible website. Incredibly hard to navigate on a computer - especially the 'Events' section.
Andrew in DC says: (12/1/16 8:15 PM)
JD - you were right the first time. Unless the barbershop victim died much later, he survived that attack.
JD says: (12/1/16 11:45 PM)
Andrew: Well, I was wrong and right and wrong and right. See UPDATE VERSION 2.0 in the post.
MJM says: (12/6/16 10:55 PM)
@202 yes a typo but JD is like twitter once its typed it typed wrong forever but not sure I'd refer to it as US DOT since I never refer to DoD as US DoD..... jdc - really those pollards and guard shack is off-putting? Okay. In case you haven't noticed we are 10 years in this quiet area and no matter what the BID attempts or the additions of billboard on Nats Park this area will be a quiet area and not a destination like Verizon Center which is used all year round. Once these parking lots are filled in the all day festivals and concerts won't have any place to set-up. If M St were anything like 14th St it might be a lot different. The days of being a go to an event for a few hours type place will be ending.
