 Sliding from Before to After

The mayor's office is unveiling today its plan to close the homeless shelter at DC General and replace it with new shelters at locations across all eight wards of the city.
Despite rumors that the Ward 6 location might be the former GSA warehouse on the southeast corner of Half and L Street, SE, the announcement today lists the Ward 6 site as being at 700 Delaware Ave., SW.
Anticipating the next question, there's no news on any plans for 49 L at this time.

Don't the feds still technically own 49 L? There was talk of them swapping it to the DC government, but that hasn't happened yet, has it?

JD says: (2/9/16 11:49 AM)
Yes, it does appear to still be owned by the Feds, but I'm pretty sure the swap is still on the boards. It was part of a deal for the city to handle some St. E's infrastructure: link

I've enjoyed the art shows and concerts at the Blind Whino church but I think this is a good outcome.

JES says: (2/9/16 12:22 PM)
The hill rag article makes it sound like the Blind Whino isn't going away.

"announced plans to build a family shelter behind the Blind Whino art gallery" makes it sound like the shelter will be adjacent to the Whino, not taking over its space.

202_cyclist says: (2/9/16 12:25 PM)
@JES-- I think you're correct. Looking at the image in the Hill Rag article, it looks like it is on the property next to the Blind Whino building.

GGW has an overview of the Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard.

A very odd piece.

JHUGrad says: (2/9/16 3:16 PM)
The city made a good decision. 49 L Street was not a good location for the shelter.

Best news all day.

E. Masquinongy says: (2/10/16 2:35 PM)
JD, about the GGW piece, I take it that you disagree with it in some significant way, but can't be bothered with rebutting it?

JD says: (2/10/16 2:36 PM)
I just thought it was really weakly written, and sounded like a sales brochure.

And I've rebutted the story of this neighborhood so many times over the past 15 years that it's going to take a lot to get me to do it again.

JHUGrad says: (2/12/16 3:30 PM)
Shooting today at the Barbershop on 8th Street... This neighborhood is getting scary...

link

JD says: (2/12/16 3:37 PM)
No, it was scary 15 years ago. All about the proportion.

I'm guessing the barber shop thing will turn out to not be some random event.

(just as that article says, apparently!)

conngs0 says: (2/12/16 3:46 PM)
No argument that the neighborhood was scarier fifteen years ago, but this event registers too far towards the wrong end of the comfortable/scary continuum not to take serious note. Hopefully the two victims recover and the police are able to get to the bottom of whatever led to this - there's no place for such an event in this neighborhood.

JHUGrad says: (2/12/16 3:54 PM)
This shooting is ridiculous. What kind of animals would shoot a two year old?

CJBabyDaddy says: (2/12/16 3:59 PM)
"there's no place for such an event in this neighborhood."

I hope you can agree that there's no place for such an event in ANY neighborhood and aren't implying that such events have a place in "designated" neighborhoods.
