Page Through from Before to After

If you've been feeling like your baseball experience is lacking in Texas barbecue, you are in luck, with the news that Hill Country Barbecue will be running a gameday sandwich shop called "The Home Stand" on the JBG/1244 South Capitol site on the northeast corner of South Capitol and N streets, SE, immediately north of the Nats Park western parking garage.
There will be picnic seating for 200, with a rotating lineup of sandwiches ranging from their Chopped Beef, Pit Smoked Turkey and Hot Link Sausage sandwiches as well as a "daily Pitmaster special." Each sandwich will come with your choice of cucumber salad, baked beans, or pasta salad.
There won't be beer and wine offerings to start, but those libations should be part of the lineup eventually.
The Home Stand will be open two hours before and after the game on home game days.
The Post says that it could open this Friday, or "if not this Friday, then by the next homestand," according to a Hill Country rep.
This site is slated to become a 290-unit residential building with 26,000 square feet of retail, but it hasn't been expected that work would begin on that project until after baseball season at the earliest.
UPDATE, 5/24: "The Home Stand" started operating on Friday, and is now duly photographed, as you see above, and here.

Does anyone know why the Brig has been taking so long? I can't understand why they'd choose to miss half of the baseball season? A simple building and a paved lot shouldn't be too difficult to construct.

Also-- be careful if you're parking on the street near 7th & L Street, SE. I noticed two cars had several tires slashed.

There's always something. Pretty much the only "service" locations that opened when they said they would over the past twelve years were a) Nats Park, b) Gordon Biersch, and c) Bonchon.

I wish the construction contractors at the lots in the neighborhood would adhere to the noise restrictions. 6:30 AM pile-driving wasn't appreciated. On the other hand, the Ruben Co. seems to be very courteous with neighbors by not keeping their trucks idling prior to 7 AM.

As per the Capitol Hill yahoo listserve:

Mayor Announces “District Innovation Zones” and New Arts Mapping Tool
Resources use innovation and technology to support District’s creative economy

"“The District Innovation Zones give us the opportunity to showcase the work of some of our grantees in a new setting,” said Kay Kendall, Chair of DCCAH. “In particular, we can highlight the creativity and innovation that our local artists and organizations put into their work that benefit the entire District.”

Today’s launch took place at Canal Park in Ward 6, which will be an innovation zone activated by recipients of DCCAH’s recent Innovate DC special arts initiative grant, which support projects that encourage and maintain the long-term development and impact on the arts, humanities and creative activities in Washington, DC. Recipients utilizing the first zone will be the Atlas Performing Arts Center, Capitol City Symphony, and Teach of Change..."

I see they've carried on the tradition (aka mistake) started by the Fairgrounds of using the wrong colors to decorate a game day destination outside Nats Park. Those umbrellas on those picnic tables are going to be pretty clutch because it's going to be pretty hot on that pavement!

Two thoughts:

1) The best part about the Hill Country spot is their "adaptive re-use" of the gas station awning. That is pure West Texas! Beautiful. (The chopped beef isn't bad, either.)

2) The Brig delay is definitely puzzling -- but despite all the heavy equipment on the tiny site, I've never seen more than two guys working at any given time. We live one block over, and can't wait for it to open and bring more pedestians to Lower Eighth -- especially at night.
