 Sliding from Before to After

Word is starting to bounce around that a tenant is close to being signed for the prime restaurant space in the ground floor of 100 M Street SE, on the northeast corner of 1st and M, one block north of Nationals Park.
As to who the tenant may be, I don't have confirmation, but rumors are mentioning a "semi-chain type place." (I'm trying to find out more, but since recent surveys indicate that 93 percent of all JDLand readers are interested in retail/restaurant news, I'm just going to go with what I've got.)
The location is advertised as 8,500 square feet, and I don't know if this rumored lease is for the entire space (though I imagine it is). One way or another, it will probably be a level of food and dining experience that's a step up from the last eating establishment on that corner, the old On Luck Cafeteria that was demolished five years ago.
I hope it goes without saying that as soon as I know more, I'll pass it along. And please remember that this is all still rumor territory, so until there's an official announcement, don't be skipping meals waiting for the new offering to arrive.
UPDATE: The rumor mill is strong that the not-yet-signed tenant is Gordon Biersch. But there's no official confirmation of that. But I've heard it from enough different places since yesterday to pass it along.

I don't really know anything but I'll give it a WAG. At that size I will guess the Green Turtle or Elephant & Castle. Those are two of the larger restaurants Transwestern Retail (tretail.com) has signed in the past. And their past deals list suggests they seem to build relationships with retailers and find them multiple placements...

I am going to really, really, mad if it's another sports bar. Give us a place like Barcode or the Carlyle.

JH says: (10/19/11 7:14 PM)
@ Eric-There is plenty of space for all kinds of restaurants in Near SE, and it's not like there is a single sports bar in the area (none of the Forest City plans call for a sports bar), so I actually think that is an amenity our neighborhood could do well having. And let's remember that any functioning restaurant with good service and drinks will do a lot more to make the neighborhood continue to develop than the currently empty space that we've been staring at for the past three years.

JH, actually the Xavier Cerrera place in the Boilmaker is supposed to be a sports bar.

I'm guessing/hoping this might be a Busboys & Poets, which would be terrific.

JH says: (10/19/11 7:51 PM)
@B--you are right! So many restaurants opening over there I can hardly keep them all straight!

Cracker Barrel or Golden Corral - I mean for CB its perfect - south(east) and near the interstate!

JD says: (10/19/11 9:23 PM)
I think it's a fabulous location for DC's first Waffle House.

Eric says: (10/19/11 11:48 PM)
Busboys and Poets? Oh god, better dig out the Che shirt from high school politics.

Sophia Monster says: (10/20/11 8:45 AM)
OMG. Cracker Barrel would be divine - and just in time for holiday shopping.

Yeff says: (10/20/11 1:32 PM)
It's Gordon Biersch

Shogungts says: (10/20/11 1:32 PM)
Not sure if MJM is joking or not, but if serious; when is the last time anyone has seen a Crackerbarrel in a city? I'm not saying that to be mean or anything, it's a serious questions as I have never seen one (especially one this far north). Golden Corral - let's just say I really hope that was a joke.

JD says: (10/20/11 1:44 PM)
Ding ding ding!

(I'm not going through the CHT/Georgetown University no-one-will-say-it commenting nonsense again.)

I haven't confirmed it with any of the principal parties, that's just what the scuttlebutt is, but since I posted this last night I've now heard Biersch as the potential tenant from about four different places.

But no lease is signed.

MJM says: (10/20/11 2:14 PM)
@Shogungts - is the Pope Catholic? Yes its a joke not the Pope question. I once heard a Perkins is an upscale Denny's - we could push for one of those.

If it is GB then we might be the local beer garden, brew-pub booze capital area of DC :)

Shogungts says: (10/20/11 2:35 PM)
MJM - I was assuming it was, but saw others answering perhaps they were joking too... and Perkins is not an upscale Denny's, it's an upscale IHOP - duh ;)

GB is a decent - not great, but better than average IMO - restaurant that seems like it would actually be a good fit. A place for business folks to go to lunch that's not too pricey but nice enough, a place with a bar for the baseball crowd, and a place with food that you dont order from a counter for all the people that live there.

JD says: (10/20/11 6:06 PM)
Dang, if I'd had known that naming GB would grind this thread to a halt, I'd have sat on it for a little longer!

FourthandEye says: (10/21/11 2:21 AM)
Ah, my premise was right but I picked the wrong past clients from Transwestern's portfolio. They've previous placed Gordon Biersch at Tysons and Rockville.

Yeff says: (10/21/11 10:32 AM)
Shooting for Opening Day but it won't happen. June 1 more likely.
