Within the past few weeks the city has received raze application permits for the five old buildings on the east side of 1st Street between K and L--the three little car repair shops on the north end of the block, and the Market Deli buildings on the south end. This stretch is all owned by Akridge, with these five buildings having been bought at various times in 2008 to go along with the mid-block empty lot with the Akridge sign that they've owned for a long time. (They also own the empty lot on the northeast corner of the block, at New Jersey and K, and at one time had an agreement to buy the lots on the southeast corner, at New Jersey and L, but that was allowed to expire with no sale.) There's so far never been any announcement from Akridge about what they plan to do with the site.
Razes aren't always immediate after the filing of a permit application, but keep your eyes out. And, if you feel like seeing the 160 buildings that have already been demolished in Near Southeast since 2003, browse the gallery.

It is progress but is gonna be sad in a way to see another old building from either the late 1800s or real early 1900s go away.

Eh - just because something is old doesn't make it worth saving. And with a little perspective, these buildings aren't even really that old.

I think if you look at the brick Market Deli and if DG is right and the tax records burned in 1905 (was that confirmed), then Market Deli (based on the facade) is probably from late 1800s since I think the tax records showed 1905. Sometimes old can be saved if it can bring a little character to an old part of town (which except for G-town was the oldest part of town/DC). The garages - yeah not old and ugly but so is Carpool in Arlington and that was fixed up. Just fear this is gonna look like a modern day Crystal City when its all done. But hopefully it doesn't build out that way.

Right. Like i said... not really that old.. depending on one's perspective. In the last few years, I've had my first chances to walk around London, Salzburg, Vienna, Bath, Brussels among a few others. The OLD stuff that's made it through is amazing. And we have some more-impressive-than-the-market-deli stuff from that late-1800s era around the neighborhood - the pumping station, the Blue Palace, the Navy Yard gates and the like.

While I agree with your point in principle, it's tough for me to get worked up on it in this specific case.

If these buildings were worth looking at I'd be all for keeping them. But they're not...so goodbye. Looking forward to something new and useful in their places.
