Sliding from Before to After
If you see some work being done on the block bounded by 1st, K, L, and Half in the next couple of days, don't get all excited that construction might be starting on the Plaza on K project. DRI--who bought the block for $69.4 million in 2007--tell me that they are going to be doing some leveling work to get rid of the eight-foot hill in the middle of the lot, to make it show a little nicer for prospective tenants who might be looking at the site. There will also be new fences put up. Plans for the site currently call for buildings totaling approximately 825,000 square feet of LEED Gold office and retail. The first phase would be 300,000-sq-ft 88 K, along with 77 I, a "headquarters" space that could provide either 125,000 or 250,000 sq ft of space. There are also plans for a 10,000-sq-ft public plaza, surrounded by 14,000 sq ft of retail, along with another building (50 K) in a later phase. You can see my project page for more details, or visit the official web site. There's no timeline at this point for when the project might get underway.

Excellent. For a week or so some of the fences have been knocked down and tons of broken glass and odd scrap metal have forced dog owners to be extra vigilant with their pets.
Also to note: they weed whacked and cleared all of the brush from the old Wendys/Gas station lot across from McDonald's between South Capitol and Half St. Looks much better; even more-so with the near completion of the 1015 Half St building.

Since this is right across from where I live (70 I) I figure this is a good place to post a question. Weve lived here 2 years and a few nights in the past week we've heard taps at 11 pm. Anyone know where it is coming from? (PS we like it and would rather hear that nightly than the car alarm that goes off in the gravel parking lot)
other lesser jd says: (12/2/10 1:30 AM)
my guess is the marine barracks. the Navy Yard doesn't do taps as far I know. there's really no place else in earshot.
MJM says: (12/2/10 8:26 AM)
The Navy Yard also plays taps around sunset too
Mark says: (12/2/10 9:22 AM)
FYI, the Navy and the USMC (a Corps within the Department of the Navy) each play retreat (not taps) at sunset everywhere around the world. In our neighborhood both the USMC barracks and the Navy Yard play retreat at sunset. Also, if you happen to be on the Yard or within the barracks when retreat is sounded you should stop whatever you are doing and turn and face the base's flag as it is lowered for the day.
Jessica says: (12/2/10 10:30 AM)
On Friday nights in the summer, you will also hear Taps played from the roof top of the Marine Barracks at the conclusion of the Evening Parade, which ends around 9:30-10:00.
