 Sliding from Before to After

This week's calendar of events:
* Tuesday at 5 pm is PSA 105's "ice cream social and dog treat event" to celebrate America's Night Out Against Crime. It will be held across the street from the MPD 1-D substation at 5th and E, SE, in Marion Park. (Also, for your long-range calendar, note that the PSA's annual dog show will be on Sept. 25 at 10 am, also at Marion Park.) If you're just tuning in, PSAs are the Metropolitan Police Department's Police Service Areas.
* Also on Tuesday, at 6:30 pm, is the second Capitol Riverfront Heritage Trail Meeting, a joint project between Cultural Tourism DC and the Capitol Riverfront BID to create a Neighborhood Heritage Trail for the area. It's at Capper Seniors #1, 900 Fifth Street, SE. (Here's the flyer for the first meeting.)
* Thursday's outdoor movie, weather permitting, is Rocky. It starts at 8:45 pm at Canal Park.
And, I took a long-delayed photo trek around the neighborhood on Sunday (though remind me to never do it again on a game day--too many cars and buses getting in the way!). They aren't really terribly exciting pictures, and the clouds were uncooperative at times, but I did get updated images of the progress at 1015 Half Street, and of the final block (east and west sides) of Capitol Quarter's first phase. And I documented the now-empty space where the Little Red Building used to be. You can also browse the entire batch of the days' photos, and click on the icon to see all photos for a given location.

i thought i saw you out snapping pics while i was out for a run yesterday - i didn't know who else would be taking a photo of I St facing the trash transfer station, haha. i wanted to say "JD! love the website!" but i didn't want to startle you and make you drop your camera :)

JD says: (8/2/10 12:15 PM)
You're always welcome to say hello! (And you wouldn't have been the only one yesterday.) But I apologize in advance if I don't chat for a long time--usually I'm in quite the psychic groove when taking photos, and I'm not always very good at pulling myself out of the haze. But I always like meeting folks!

JD says: (8/2/10 12:25 PM)
Of course, now I see that I should have gotten to Half and K to get 1015 Half photos from that angle, but I honestly thought my last pictures showed all of the glass exterior installed, so that I didn't need new ones. Oops. I'm so out of practice.

JD - Any thoughts on the free parking being removed at 909 Apartments as well as Jefferson and The Axiom? They are taking what free spaces are there and installing meters. Is there any talk, with the removal of these free spaces, that residents in our neighborhood might eventually be eligible for Zone Parking or Permits of some sort? I'm so frustrated with the lack of thought that seems to permeate the SE sometimes, the folks that live down there are the last thing on the city's mind sometimes.

JD says: (8/2/10 4:34 PM)
Josh--It's always been the plan, as it is across the city, that there are no on-street zone parking permits provided for residents of multiunit buildings in areas that area zoned commercial. This first came up in late 2007, during the planning for on-street parking in advance of the opening of the ballpark, and there's no plans for change. (The only reason that there were free on-street spaces as late as now was because those spots were hidden behind construction fences when the original multispace meters were installed.)

There's no way that street parking can accommodate all the residents of current and planned apartment buildings, plus office workers and then people who want to visit retail establishments once they finally arrive. So, as with any zoned commercial area in the city, there are no on-street parking permits given to residents.

I'll also note that plenty of my readers have complained to DDOT and Tommy Wells about this over the years, with no resolution to their liking.

Driving under the 4th St underpass at about 1pm-ish on Sunday, my girlfriend said, "Who would want to take pictures of this street?"

I said, "That must be JD."

JD says: (8/3/10 3:45 PM)
Jason: :-) !

(Whenever people stop me and ask if I'm "that lady with the web site", I always respond, "What gave it away, that there just aren't many people who'd be standing in the street taking pictures of buildings?")
