At its November meeting, ANC 6D received an update on the progress of Canal Park, but I was out of town and missed the presentation, so I've gotten a quick status update from Chris Vanarsdale of the Canal Park Development Association. He passes along that the design development phase is nearing completion, and that hopefully in a few weeks they'll make available a revised plan view of the park--the middle block has apparently undergone some significant changes, with the addition of a much larger water feature and the reconfiguration of the pavilion in that block. You can see some renderings of the pavilions planned for the south end of the park (at M Street) on my Canal Park page, although there will probably be some revisions to the designs of these structures as well.
On the flip side, the anticipated start of construction is now being quoted as September 2010, about six months later than what's been on the boards for most of this year. It was reported back in October that the design approved by the National Capital Planning Commission would cost $18 million, $5.5 million more than the grant the CPDA has received to design and build the park; I don't know whether the park's design is being scaled back or whether they're still hoping to raise the extra funds (I've asked, but haven't received an answer).

Normally I'm all for progress in the hood, but I'm not going to lie, I've really enjoyed using the space as a temporary dog park. It's really the only social spot in the neigbhorhood where I've met people from other parts of the hood, and almost all have been really friendly. The dog loves it as well.

Ed, i agree. I'm a little annoyed that most of the park is eventually going to be cement. What a waste of nice green space.

On the upside, it's doubtful Canal Park will be built in our lifetimes, so we can continue to use it as open space for our dogs!

I couldn't agree more, I've met more people from the row homes and other buildings on the middle lot with my dog than the previous year and a half walking around the neighboorhood... I hope the final design leaves space for neighborhood socializing... it is nice to have while we've got it!

Yeah, I agree the dog park is nice. But Ice skating will be nice, too. It will be finished just in time for hell to freeze over.

Hopefully they will account for the dogs in the new space. I see the third lot has some grass on it and I'm sure we will take that space over once it's done.

Appreciate dog owners desire to have a nearby space, but you got to be kidding me that you want what exists currently to remain? It's a dirt patchwork of muddy, nasty grass with poop and pee and barking dogs throughout the night. The park sans a hundred dogs with skating, water features, trees and grass without the fear of stepping in poop will be awesome! Hopefully some nearby accommodation for dogs can be made but they will not be the focus. Let's get construction started!!
