Groundbreaking for First Phase at Florida Rock/Riverfront / Photo Gallery
December 9, 2014
An event 20 years in the making: the ceremonial groundbreaking for the first phase of the redevelopment of the Florida Rock site on the west bank of the Anacostia, a 300-unit apartment building with 18,000 square feet of retail called The Riverfront. (Read more about this event.)
The post-groundbreaking view of the ceremonial shovels, along with a hint of the breadth of the site's view up the Anacostia River. (link)
Turning and giving the shovels a Douglass Bridge backdrop. This bridge's replacement needs to be built and this one demolished before the 3rd and 4th phases of the Florida Rock development can be completed. (But Phase 2 doesn't have to wait for that.) (link)
When organizers said there would be a pig roast following the groundbreaking, they weren't kidding. (link)
