Regarding the discussion in the comments the other day about whether residential units will ever be built above the parking garages at Nats Park, they can follow the example of this architectural vomit but I would expect it wouldn’t be financially feasible until the rest of JD Land, the South Capitol Street corridor, and Buzzard Point are fully built-out.link

@202_cyclist, there is parking above the Harris Teeter with apartments above that, and it isn't even noticeable.

Ditto the Whole Foods. Public parking is on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

JD, excellent sliders! Always a thrill to see the changes to the neighborhood.
I thought there was an error with the label on the one at 4th and Virginia. With the slider right in the middle, it looks as if that exact photo could have been taken 2 months ago, when the rubble from the Capper Senior center fire was still on the ground and the CQ rowhouses on the right.

I agree that using that space for the apartments is not a bad thing and I don't think they look all that bad either ... having cars at ground level is not great for the streetscape/street life but a building that is just parking is a total dead zone and the bigger it is, the bigger the dead zone.
Great work JD! It's really fun to look at all these.

@walt-- the difference between the apartments built above the Whole Foods garage and the apartments in the photo I posted the link to or any possible apartments that would be built above the Nats Park garage is that the apartments above the Whole Foods were designed to be part of that building, so the garage was engineered to accommodate them and the building was designed to blend in the garage.
Any apartments built above the Nats Park garage would likely require significant structural reinforcement for the garage, compromising the aesthetics of the structure.

202: A panel of world renowned architects spent the duration of the Mueller investigation brainstorming and just issued a confidential report to the Architect of the Capitol concluding that there is no way to negatively affect the aesthetics of the Nats parking garage(s).

Boombox Boxing, billing itself as "boxing remixed" and "your next group fitness obsession" is apparently on its way to the 1221 Van bldg at South Cap and N in May, following on its stint of pop-up classes at the Lululemon in the Yards. Facebook page: link
(and h/t to MJM for the tidbit)

So, any predictions for the Nats this season?
says: (3/25/19 5:27 PM)
Their pitching staff is pretty solid, the bullpen is uncertain. Rendon, Eaton, Trea Turner, Soto, and Victor Robles will provide solid offense. They have much better catchers than Matt Weiters. Did Ryan Zimmerman hit the links again this spring or did he play spring training? I think they will be either 1st or 2nd in the NL East.

I'm psyched that Suzuki is back. I thought he was a great part of the team back in his previous stint.

Did anyone else hear gunshots around NJ Ave or the Whole Foods around midnight last night? Several people heard them but I haven’t seen anything on MPD’s Twitter feed.

There was a stabbing in the 800 block of 3rd last night--maybe the shots were related to that?
says: (3/26/19 10:35 AM)
JD-- thank you for the update. Do you know what time the stabbing was? I think my wife mentioned the stabbing.

I'm losing my mind. I swore I got an e-mail alert about it that I read first thing this morning, and it's in this morning's Crime Report, but I can't find it, and there's no tweet either. Here's from the Crime Report:

And, by the way, thanks for the kind words on the Sliders. They are really becoming my favorite part of the site. Other than the comments, of course. :)

Union Kitchen Grocery, Compass Coffee and Cold Stone Creamery to West Half: link
says: (3/26/19 4:33 PM)
I've only had to bite my tongue on the first two of those for about a year now. :)
says: (3/26/19 4:36 PM)
Although, wait, I had always heard Union Kitchen and Compass were coming to 1221 Van. But same developer, maybe the retail folks decided West Half was a better spot. (and Union Kitchen and Compass are doing a shared space in the Post at 1301 K NW).
And that story says that the Commons is now going to be named Gatsby?
says: (3/26/19 4:46 PM)
Yeah, maybe the interior designers settled on a Great Gatsby theme? That might be kinda cool.
If I had to guess, maybe Union Kitchen and Compass moved because 1221 Van is basically filled up? Is there any more space in there, now that Mission, Walter's, District Dogs, and this Boombox place are all in there?
says: (3/26/19 4:55 PM)
They were rumored a while back, and I'm guessing that District Dogs and Boombox maybe came along after they decided to switch locations?
says: (3/27/19 11:19 AM)
I bet it was something like that. Regardless, I'm glad we're getting all of them still, no matter where they are!
