While waiting for further news about Wednesday afternoon's serious fire at the Capper Seniors building at 900 5th St., SE, I thought I'd post this item, which people may not find of much interest:
"Whole Foods Market will open its new 35,000 square-foot South Capitol Hill store, located at 101 H St. SE Washington DC, at 9 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 18. The opening day festivities will include sampling and fun for all ages."
{Can I just say that I love that it's called the South Capitol Hill store?}
One interesting tidbit in the press release is the news that the store will be the "second location of DC-based Kaz Sushi Bistro." There's also plans for a "yet-to-be unveiled dining venue with mouthwatering selections from a DC local chef." That's alongside the "SoCap Wine Bar and Pub," which will offer "offer 16 wines by the glass and 12 beers on tap, with the ability to sip & shop."
There will also be a "full-service Allegro Espresso Bar with smoothies and self-serve draft cold-pressed juice, nitro coffee, tea on tap and build-your-own acai bowls." Not to mention prepared foods, expert butchers and fishmongers, a pasta bar and olive/antipasti bar, lots of beer and wine selections, and offerings from more than 100 local suppliers, including Ice Cream Jubilee.
The store will be open from 7 am to 10 pm daily.

Statement from Charles Allen:

"Councilmember Charles Allen and staff are on-site currently at the fire at the Arthur Capper Senior Building at 900 5th St., SE to help displaced residents. From Councilmember Allen:

“We aren’t sure how the fire started at Arthur Capper Senior Building in Navy Yard. DC Firefighters needed to rescue a few residents via window from the higher floors. When neighbors saw there was smoke, they ran into the building and started alerting senior residents by knocking on doors. When our office got word, our staff started calling to alert residents inside the building. There’s no doubt the alert and fast action of those neighbors and our DC Fire and EMS saved lives today. Initial count has every resident account for – which is a testament to the fast responses of our community. Given how vulnerable this population is, the city is going to be working all-night to make sure everyone has a safe place to stay. Immediate shelter is available in the community room at the Capper Community Center at 1000 5th St., SE. Everyone is asked to please remain out of the area otherwise to allow emergency services to work.”

Arthur Capper Senior Building is at 900 5th ST., SE, with 162 units of 1- and 2-bedroom apartments that are 100 percent affordable. It is a vibrant and important building for our seniors living in Navy Yard.

Early on, DCFD appeared to rely primarily on remotely controlled extension ladder hoses that seemed to do not much more than get the exterior of the roof wet from above. Meanwhile, the fire apparently was burning like a MF, spreading throughout the interior of the attic, before bursting through the roof in multiple locations.

It is amazing that the firefighters are still battling the fire now for nearly six hours. I really feel sorry for the seniors who’ve lost their belongings and don’t have shelter now.

I'm extremely excited for the build your own acai bowls @ the new Whole Foods. Acai bowls are everywhere in San Diego and Seattle, but few and far between in DC.

Kaz Sushi is probably one of best sushi spots in the city. Very excited for that, plus whatever "mystery" venue they have planned.
