 Sliding from Before to After

At 8 am on Friday, Dec. 23, the first double-stacked train passed through the newly built southern tunnel under Virginia Avenue, SE, marking the official completion of that phase of the Virginia Avenue Tunnel project.
(Alas, the photo at left shows a train coming through the old tunnel, before the rails were laid into the new one, but whaddyagonnado.)
Now Phase II of the project is kicking into gear, which is the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing 100-plus-year-old northern tunnel. That work is expected to be completed, along with the streetscape restoration improvements to Virginia Avenue, in mid-2018.
If you want to see some photos from inside the new tunnel as work was being completed, CSX has them in this presentation.
As part of the work on the northern tunnel, the intersection of 7th and Virginia is expected to close Any Minute Now for about two weeks. Of course, 3rd Street remains closed at Virginia for similar work of demolishing the temporary deck over the now-completed new tunnel and rebuilding it over the northern tunnel; it is expected to reopen in January.

I like how every few months I get to take a different route home after getting off at the 6th ST exit.

@dude - not sure where your eventual end destination is, but if you are going to the Navy Yard area, have you tried exiting 395 at exit 6 (the exit to continue on 395N as opposed to 695)? I live on 3rd North of the highway, but If I am going to the Navy Yard area, I take exit 6, turn right onto Washington Ave, left onto D St and then right onto NJ ave.

If 395 is backed up, I will often take exit 6 and instead of turning on NJ ave, I stay on D until I hit 3rd.

Edit: I said that I turn on D St, but actually it is E St that I use as I believe it is faster, but D would work as well.

Is it just me or has there been a sharp uptick in the number of trains (and horns) that I'm hearing following the completion of this tunnel?

dude says: (12/31/16 6:05 PM)
@ShogunGTS yes I could do that as well, but I'd end up with a few more stops (lights/stop signs). We are at 4th and L so it's easy enough to get off at the 6th ST exit, left on Virginia, left on 4th. It's no big deal, just never lived in another place where the best route home changes every few months.

I haven't noticed more trains or horns, but we are probably far enough away.

That reminds me though, does anyone know why the National Anthem is being played around 8 every morning? Seems to me it started about a month ago. Perhaps it's always been happening but now it's louder? Personally I like it, but I don't know where it's coming from.

snakegriffin says: (12/31/16 10:07 PM)
That's new? I feel like I've been hearing it ever since we moved back to the neighborhood (April).

202_cyclist says: (1/1/17 12:48 AM)
Happy New Year!

@Dude-- the Navy plays the national anthem and also the revelry daily. It is a recording.

202_cyclist says: (1/1/17 7:25 AM)
Did anyone else hear the several loud explosions around 2:30 AM? I assume someone was lighting off fireworks.

JD says: (1/1/17 9:55 AM)
The Hill is Home is on the National Anthem stuff--seems like the Navy Yard must have gotten a new sound system or something. link

Also, a reader reports this morning that the windows at Five Guys are papered over--can anyone confirm? I have heard nothing about it closing, and I can't imagine that location is struggling, but it's been there 11 years, so I dunno, maybe it's done?

202_cyclist says: (1/1/17 11:26 AM)
JD--- correct, we saw that Five Guys was closed yesterday and the the windows were papered over. Hopefully it isn't permanently closed.

snakegriffin says: (1/1/17 12:44 PM)
Maybe they saw the writing on the wall with the Shake Shack opening soon? I thought they did good enough business to compete though. I would patronize both!

JD says: (1/1/17 1:58 PM)
A source says it is indeed just a "refresh" at Five Guys. Maybe milkshakes are coming, too...
