This weekend Canal Park will be hosting the second annual Parcel Market, from 12 to 6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, with its "interactive art installations, a cozy food pavilion warmed by fire pits, live & local music performances, and a chic festival tent showcasing a thoughtfully curated list of local designers, artists, chefs, and food artisans." *
Plus, the neighborhood is getting a Christmas tree for the first time, in the park's southern block between L and M, and the Capitol Riverfront BID is inviting all residents to help decorate the tree on Saturday morning, from 9 to 11 am. Bring an ornament for the tree and canned food to donate to the Capital Area Food Bank, and get a taste of coffee or hot chocolate from Philz, the new coffee shop that will be coming to Tingey Street in a few months.
The tree will then be illuminated at 6 pm on Saturday, Dec. 5, with Dupont Brass providing the seasonally appropriate music.
The market will feature all manner of items, including clothes, jewelry, accessories, pet toys and apparel, artwork, printmaking, and "home enhancements." Food will also be available for Dirty South Deli, Ben's Chili Bowl, Bluejacket Brewery, Ice Cream Jubilee, Agua 301, District Doughnut, and more.
If you want your visit to be a bit more hands-on, there will be workshops to make greeting cards, wreaths, and more. And of course the ice rink will be open.
(*Sorry to just quote a big chunk of text--today's my last day in the old building at the Post and I arrive with the first wave in the new building on Friday, so life continues to be just a wee bit hectic.)

It'll be pretty amazing if they can't get opened soon and thus manage to miss out on three consecutive seasons of potential profit from the ice skating rink. One year the rink itself was broken and didn't open until late in the season. And last year the weather was so cold that I'm sure most folks elected to stay indoors. Hopefully they get their act together - seems like a lot of unfulfilled potential there.

Park Tavern is due to re open as a Napoli themed Italian restaurant sometime in January ((hopefully).

Park Tavern is a joke, and I would assume Napoli will not be any better and perhaps worse. The service is consistent, consistently awful. The food was expensive for being a "Tavern". Now they want to be an Italian restaurant but we already have a great on in the neighborhood with Morini. The restaurant will miss the boat for another 3 years. They should be a tavern with tavern/comfort food at affordable prices...but no, they will fail again.

I share your skepticism given how poorly Park Tavern has been run so far. That said, that restaurant group has produced a few solid establishments (although I'm sure opinions differ on that point), and I imagine that Park Tavern was particularly difficult to run given the fact that it was opening right while all that Chapter 11 drama came to a head.

So... perhaps a fresh start is exactly what they need. Plus I think there's still an Italian food niche to be filled for the neighborhood (at least until/if Nicoletta opens). I'm certainly willing to give Park Tavern one chance to see if it can manage to put out high quality (and reasonably priced) Neapolitan pizza, plus maybe a few other "staple" Italian dishes and a decent beer menu.
