 Sliding from Before to After

Some details out today about Bang Salon at the Yards, which will be coming in late summer as part of the "$6.5 million, 30,000-square-foot fitness and lifestyle complex" anchored by VIDA Fitness at Forest City's Twelve12 apartment and retail project in the Yards.
The 1,500-square-foot space will have a design described in a press release as "a fusion of modern, fresh and lively configurations that incorporates sophisticated hues of purple, black and white to create a classic, chic retro look," as can be seen in the rendering. There will be 15 stations, which will be encased in "glossy dove grey pods with tufted silver leather panels."
Bang, which already has three locations elsewhere in the area, apparently uses a performance-based pricing system--rating the stylists, not the clients--as well as an online booking option. Not surprisingly, Bang's own hair and body products will also be available for purchase.
VIDA's other affiliates, the Penthouse Pool Club and the Aura Spa, are also coming to Twelve12's three-story glass-enclosed retail complex at 4th and Tingey. In addition, Sweetgreen and TaKorean have signed leases to occupy ground-floor space on this corner, and Harris Teeter is now working on its own build-out at the north end of the block. It's also right across the street from the Boilermaker Shops, home of Bluejacket and Buzz Bakery, in case you need a reward after all the self-pampering and good living.

We tried out the one on U Street not long ago (in anticipation of this one, actually). Both wife and I were quite satisfied with our cuts. Men's pricing seemed steep to me (then again, I was used to paying 15 bucks at SuperCuts), but the women's pricing was more than reasonable. Happy for it to be closer to home soon.

I go to Bang at the Verizon and am pretty happy with the service. As for this line:"apparently uses a performance-based pricing system--rating the stylists," the way it was described to me by someone who works there is the rating of the stylists is based on things such as percentage of clients who book their next appointment on their way out, amount of products sold by the client, etc. None of the factors were actually based on the skill of the employee (although the booking percentage could be tied to that). I am with the service/pricing so I still go there, but I find it somewhat insulting that you have to pay more for a higher rated stylist when they are really probably just better at selling products.

Disclaimer: this is all assuming the person who works there was telling me the truth.

I would be up for the online booking, just because there is nothing that I hate more than calling places to make appointments. (Or calling places for any reason, actually.)

Here's how the press release describes the pricing system (I didn't quote it in my post because I wasn't sure I needed to be writing about the "Likert scale" similarity):

"Similar to the economics principle of supply and demand, Bang Salon features a unique pricing system that is based strictly on client inquiries and performance of each individual stylist and is not reliant on how many years of experience or awards/recognitions they have accumulated. Modeled after a Likert scale, (with 1 being the lowest/least expensive level and 4A being the highest), this competitive pricing system addition allows the stylist to charge more per appointment the higher level they achieve. In return, it grants the valued customer a variety of styling and haircut cost options to choose from."

I'm also a Bang Salon client (Metropole) and really like my stylist. However, the Metropole location is rather inconvenient for me so I'm looking forward to going to the new location at The Yards.

@JD - absolutely, the online booking is one of the best parts of Bang; I am surprised so many places still don't have this option in 2014. My schedule is too busy to know when I am going to be available in 5 weeks and calling someone to discuss available times over the next week is almost always a painful experience.

"Similar to the economics principle of supply and demand, Bang Salon features a unique pricing system that is based strictly on client inquiries and performance of each individual stylist and is not reliant on how many years of experience or awards/recognitions they have accumulated."

This seems to mesh with what I was told; if you are able to book a high amount of clients immediately after their haircut ("client inquires and <presumably> performance"). I get the supply and demand aspect of the pricing, but if the other part about selling products leads to a higher rating and therefore more expensive haircut, I rather pay less and not be pressured to by overpriced shampoo/styling products/etc.

Either way, I have been happy with my experiences there, I just get a kick out of them promoting their rating system when it seems they charge you extra for getting your hair cut by a better sales person.

Echoing above -- you pay a more for Bang but can be worth it for quality and convenience.

Hi JD - glad to see you're back with this wonderful blog and the fantastic news updates!! :-)

May I ask when Harris Teeter will finally complete its store and have a grand opening? I'm eager to shop there!!! :-)

JD says: (3/25/14 6:29 PM)
@jbest05 - Thank you! Though I will probably never return to the full glory days of a few years ago, I'll be trying to at least keep up with the big stuff. :-)

I last heard October-ish as an opening date for Teeter.
