Sliding from Before to After
With election time nearing, there's some events coming up next week that might/should be of interest. (Coincidentally, election time means that my "real life" gets a bit hectic, plus I have some other stuff going on, which means that things might be a bit slow around here, and I'm probably not going to be able to make any of these events. So you have plenty of notice that you'll need to attend them yourselves!) * On Monday, Oct. 25, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, the Ward 6 Dems are hosting a Ward 6 School Board Candidates Forum at Maury Elementary School, 1250 Constitution Ave., NE. The two candidates -- Melissa Rohan and Monica Warren-Jones -- will be suitably grilled about their plans and vision for Ward 6's public schools. * Also on Monday the 25th, starting at 7 pm, the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly is hosting a " Meet Your ANC 6D Candidates" event at St. Augustine's church, on the southwest corner of 6th and M Streets, SW. You may have heard that Near Southeast has two candidates for its one single member district (SMD) 6D07--incumbent Bob Siegel and challenger David Garber--but there are six commission spots in Southwest up for grabs as well. (Just beware when parking next to the church on Water Street--this past Monday, for the first time in all my times arriving at St. Augustine's just before 7 pm for ANC meetings, I got ticketed at one of the meters, which never even occurred to me would still be active at that time of night. Maybe I should take up a collection!) * At 6:30 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 27, is Presumed-Mayor-Elect Vince Gray's Ward 6 Town Hall, being held at the Atlas Performing Arts Center at 1333 H St., NE. If you follow various local reporters on Twitter, you've been pelted with Tweets from the other wards' town halls over the past few weeks, but now it'll be Ward 6's turn. Here's the flyer with details. * For something a little less election-y and more spirit-of-the-season-y, on Friday Oct. 29 the Navy Yard is once again presenting the " Ghost Ship Barry" -- "Hundreds have served onboard but some never left." Boo! The hours run from 6 to 7 pm for kids 12 and under, and 7:30 to 9:30 pm for ages 13 and up. But note that they want you to RSVP first, by calling 202-433-0280. And then you can see what the Navy Yard's portion of the riverwalk looks like without having to look through the fence at the Yards Park.

A note for the ANC interested: all ANC 6D members vote on issues concerning Near Southeast. Seems odd, but with the current setup, 6 commissioners who represent SW have 6/7ths of the votes concerning Near SE items. So it may be of interest to see who these people might be and what their views are.
Bring your Ward 6 parking cards and you can park along 6th Street or I Street for the Monday event at St. A's.

Starting to see the initial signs of work inside Harry's of SE/SW in the 909 New Jersey building. Hopefully they will be able to open up sometime early in 2011. We'll see.

link
This link describes the program for visitor pass parking, which you can use anywhere in Ward 6 where you see Zone 6 permit exempt on parking signs with limits.
JD says: (10/22/10 9:13 PM)
Do you get a Ward 6 visitor's parking permit if you're ineligible for a Residential Parking Permit (RPP) sticker, as is the case for the people in Near SE who live in the multiunit buildings?
JT says: (10/23/10 1:07 PM)
Residents really abuse the visitor passes they're given and use them to park their own cars on the streets permanently.
I like the idea of the visitor passes, but they're not at all being used for their intended purpose.
It says pretty clearly on the link posted by Glenn that "The VPP is not to be used as a substitute for an RPP sticker on a vehicle owned by a resident of the household."
MJ says: (10/24/10 1:31 AM)
Those of us who live in Onyx, Axiom, etc, aren't even eligible for Ward 6 resident or visitors' passes :(
Glenn says: (10/25/10 10:35 AM)
Well, I hope you can find a way to get to the meeting anyway. You won't be able to watch it on tv or get it later on line...
Amy says: (10/28/10 12:46 PM)
Does any one know of the ghost ship is geared towards just kids or is the later time also for adults. My husband and I don't want to go and be the odd couple without kids!
BRJ says: (10/28/10 2:55 PM)
We're taking our 5 yr old at 6:00. We were warned by a troop/sailor after 7:30 it becomes pretty serious... made a couple of 8th graders cry last year. Chain saws (gas not electric) were just part of the props. I might go back with friends later to see how it is.
AB says: (10/28/10 4:45 PM)
I'm planning on going to the ship tomorrow night with some other neighborhood couples in their early 30s, and none of us have kids. It sounds like a fun festive Halloween event!
MJM says: (10/28/10 6:15 PM)
Not w/o looking it up - I think 7-8 is when it becomes adultish. Check out the Riverfront BID page or JD's link above. See ya there! :)
BTW - why is this for one night? I thought this military thing in the hood was all about openness (slight sarcastic)?
Amy says: (10/28/10 7:17 PM)
Thanks for the info! We are excited to go, just didn't want to look like a sad childless couple in ChuckECheese.
BBC says: (10/29/10 9:07 AM)
The military has always been here and they are about openness, far more open than any other military in the world and maybe more open than they should be. The USS Barry and the Navy Museum are open throughout the year. I am not sure why a Ghost ship open to the public more "open" that a museum ship open to the public. By the way, did anyone catch the Chamber Orchestra Series that the Marines had at the BEQ? (That was also open to the public.) We were always somewhere else and sadly missed the whole series.
