According to the Post's DC Wire blog, the final chapter of the Garages Wrapped With Development Goodness saga has now been written: "Developer Herbert Miller has settled his $40 million lawsuit against the District government over the failed plan to build two 13-story condominium towers just outside Nationals Park. Under the settlement, the city will pay Miller's Western Development $2 million and the company will drop its legal grievances, according to Miller's son Ben, who is now the company's president." Above is the design for the condo/garages, and here's my various entries on the Miller plan. While you look at those links, think about the current four-story parking lots in the outfield and imagine them with another eight stories on top. And no centerfield plaza, either.

I can very well imagine these buildings built and it is a much better view than what we have now. The current garages are nothing more than cheap placeholders for the future developer. This land and those views are too valuable to use for the occasional car. The future premium parking will go underground like every new building being built around there... and was parking really the big problem everyone made it out to be? It's just too bad that the city didn't allow this to go forward when it should have.

I agree. I'd take modern, green-roofed, 12-story highrises with ground floor retail any day over those horrendous parking garages. Seriously, I wince every time I drive past the stadium and see them.

I would prefer buildings with ground floor retail as well ...even if they are 12 stories. Maybe in the short term (if the garages do not fill) they can dress up the outer edges of the ground parking level and turn those spaces into shops. Anyway, the area around the stadium is still a great area that is going through a wonderful transformation, garages or not. So, I guess we can't complain too much. I think that the garages will go, but not for several years.

Yes, hopefully the garages will get replaced with something else in the future.

And, god willing, please please please let that something else NOT be residential units. Make it something complementary to Nationals ballpark.

Perhaps something green (like an urban garden?) or low-rise commercial would work.

One thing that irks me about those garages is the tents they've put up on the one behind left field. Check the view of the Capitol now with that red ugly top in place, you can barely see the top of the dome.
