Kitchen Pics

Our kitchen remodel was handled by Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. of Bethesda, MD. The design was mostly ours (well, mostly Bill's, I mainly get to take credit for replacing half the utility closet with the peninsula), but Nicole at Case provided great guidance and was very good at steering us away from any truly stupid notions. And now there's a Bathroom Remodel to watch!

May 17 (All moved back in, and cluttered up!):

Looking into the kitchen, through Bill's newly painted office.

Good view of the new bar stools (with low backs that provide support but allow the stools to be pushed completely under the counter), as well as the bar, with its stainless backsplash. The new clock is a festive addition as well.

Funny how countertops don't look quite so sleek once all your crap gets put back into place! (These photos also remind us how glad we are we didn't ditch the stainless miniblinds.)

More clutter! The very narrow cabinet to the left of the refrigerator holds cookie sheets, cooling racks, muffin tins, and the like.

Lots of our favorite design touches are centered around the peninsula: the "dining" letters, the framed diner print, the stools, the closet with the chalkboard door, and the pot rack ($11 from Ikea!).

The cat food dishes have been moved from their old spot by the refrigerator, but Guga doesn't seem to have figured that out.

Bill's work of genius: the magnetic spice rack, affixed to the left side of the refrigerator. (Yes, he made all the labels.)

April 22 (Basically finished):

April 21:

Painting about to be finished.

Painting again (and the second go-round on the new drawer pulls).

What it looked like before.

Looking into the kitchen from Bill's office, where painting is also underway. (Color of Bill's office is accurately reproduced, but the kitchen color isn't right here, the pictures above are the real color.)

April 15:

Glass tile backsplash now finished.

What it looked like before.

Finished tile backsplash, again.

What it looked like before.

April 14:

Glass tile backsplash in progress, along with new drawer pulls.

New backsplash and drawer pulls, again.

What it looked like before.

April 8:

New under-cabinet lighting (mood light version).

New pendant light (it's really more gold, but my camera didn't handle it well), and the return of the floor.

Just looking for another excuse to show off the floor, the faucet, and the cabinet lights.

April 7:

The new range, dishwasher, and faucet.

The new faucet, and JD's favorite, the built-in soap dispenser.

Old school: Amana Radarange microwave, and Frigidaire dual-fuel range. Best surprise here has been the black ceramic cooktop, which blends in amazingly well with the counters.

The TV in its new home, and a view of the nook behind the peninsula.

Close up of the nook, as Guga tries to figure out how he's going to get in the garbage in its new location.

Sink, faucet, microwave, and glass racks above the sink.

The same spot, back in the old days.

April 6:

Arrival of the new granite counters ("black galaxy"), and the new dishwasher (stainless steel under the blue sticky cover) and new stove.

The old stuff. Funny, I thought the old countertops were black! They look gray here!

New fridge, range (microwave/hood not yet installed), and cabinets.

What we used to have.

The new bar-height peninsula, with the water heater now enclosed behind the louvred panel. (and the new floor peeking out, desperate to be seen again!)

What it used to look like, with the old closet obscuring the view of the cabinets in the nook.

Looking at the peninsula from the other direction.

The old closet

Face-on view of the peninsula, with the niche where the flat-panel TV will go :-).

April 3:

The new cork floor!

Another view of the new cork floor!

Close up of the new cork floor!

March 24:

The main galley, where you can see the pulls that we salvaged from the old kitchen.

The peninsula wall, with the new cabinets at far left and also the new door to the fuse box area.

The new cabinets in the refrigerator corner. (The filled-in doors up top are an error, they should be soon-to-be-glass-paneled, like all the others.)

A straight-on view of the fridge corner, including the new fridge enclosure and the much deeper-than-before cabinets above.

March 23:

New cabinets in the nook area. (Including the one that they told us yesterday didn't arrive and would need three weeks to be delivered.)

What it looked like before.

Cabinets going in.

Still lots of boxes, but the refrigerator corner is filling in.

March 16:

Drywall was hung today--the refrigerator will go on the still-painted-green part of the wall.

What it looked like yesterday. (Alas, the old wallpaper returns to its hiding place.)

Drywall around the reconfigured closet/peninsula area.

What it looked like before.

Drywall now in place. You can also see the plumbing for the sink and the wiring for the under-counter lighting.

March 15:

The drywall was falling apart on both sides of the door frame, and when they ripped said drywall off, they found the studs rotted beyond repair. So, new studs (and more insulation! Yay!)

Completion of the framing for what will be the new counter-height peninsula, replacing the old closet.

March 11:

The arrival of the new "low-boy" water heater.

March 9:

Guga checks out the new framing on the east wall, in preparation for new drywall.

Framing begins on the wall that used to be the closet, and around the not-good-enough-to-be-exposed brick.

March 3:

The return of a floor.

March 2:

We've been de-floored.

Zoomed in: Water damage turned out to be more extensive, the joists had
to come out and the brick needed to be resealed and shored up.

Lots more old wallpaper.

March 1, Demolition Begins: (w/before pics)

Old wallpaper found beneath the drywall.
