We went to see Liz Phair at the 9:30 club last night. It was one of the better live shows I've seen--she was very much at ease on stage, talked a lot, and seemed to really enjoy performing. The only time she looked a little bored was when she finished the show with "Supernova." (Speaking of "finishing the show", can we at long last ditch the prepared encores?) Of course, it was hard to see Liz, given that she's only 5'2" and we were on the floor standing amongst a whole lot of tall people.

And now, for no good reason, a list of the bands I've seen over the years. I wish I could say it was complete--I was very good in my younger days about writing down all of my recreational activities, but then I got old and stupid. And deaf, probably from all these shows.... A lot of the shows at the 9:30 (a moment's silence, please, as we remember the original location at 930 F Street) were "3 Bands/3 Bucks" nights, so when you see a big pile of no-names, remember that we were there more for the 3 Bucks portion rather than anything specific about the 3 Bands.

As for entry #1, it was my parents' idea. That's all I can say.

I KNOW you didn't see any concerts while you worked for me, unless you snuck into Cowboy Songs and lied about it.
Suzanne | email | October 13, 2005 03:36 PM

No, but I did drive to Billings just to see a Woody Allen movie!
JD | October 13, 2005 05:27 PM

I'm surprised you didn't have to drive to Denver or Minneapolis.
Suzanne | email | October 13, 2005 07:17 PM

That's a shame that she looks bored while doing one of her best songs.
Mike | October 14, 2005 10:19 AM

I'm guessing it might have become *too* big of a song for her. Or she's played it too many times.
JD | October 14, 2005 10:57 AM

Or she's just really proud of her new crap. (Yes, I'm bitter.)
Mike | October 14, 2005 11:22 AM

All the crowd wanted to hear was Fuck and Run.
JD | October 14, 2005 12:19 PM

Damn right they did. (I've been humming "letters and sodas" to myself all day today.)
Mike | October 14, 2005 12:28 PM

Well, I know you went to see the Jazz Passengers featuring Deborah Harry on Dec. 1, 1995, at Blues Alley in Georgetown as I was with you. However, I believe you spent most of the time outside because it was so Frickin' LOUD!!!! (I know wear ear plugs too all shows, well, except Olivia Newton-John!)

I was surprised that "Divorce Song" seemed to be such a touchstone.
