Devils Tee

"The property" is 640 acres of ranchland in northeastern Wyoming, nestled between the town of Hulett and the Devils Tower (you know, Close Encounters of the Third Kind). The property was willed to my mother by her uncle, Eugene, who owned it after his uncle, Guy, willed it to him. (This land is next to the land also formerly owned Eugene that was originally homesteaded by my great grandfather, Mark. Don't ask why that property is no longer in the family; that question causes apoplexy in myself, my mother, and my brother.)

As you can see, this is pretty virgin territory, and pretty remote territory, too. Someday we may build a cabin up on the point, where we'll be able to sit on the porch and look south to the Tower and to the Missouri Buttes, but until then we'll have to satisfy ourselves with picnics and nature walks. These pictures were taken in August, 1998.

The Lower Property
Coming in through the lower gate.
Even an all wheel drive vehicle can only get you in so far.

We've scoped out this meadow as a perfect par 4.

Grass and pine trees hide the barn.
A bit of a walk brings the old barn into full view.

These buildings, near Sawmill Gulch,
were inhabited until 1937.

The roof has caved in, but signs of life
(such as the screens for the porch) are still there.

Climbing Upward
Cattle trails near the far fence line help you wind your way through the trees.
As you climb, rim rock (such as Boone Rock) becomes more prevalent.
Looking back after scaling Boone Rock shows the angle of the climb.
Looking up, the last part of the climb to the point doesn't seem so bad....

The Point

...Until you get there, turn around, and realize how far you've come.
A nice little view from where the cabin may one day be.
The ridge that is "the point" stretches nearly half a mile.
The "back view" of the point proves that pine is never far away.
Further north, away from the point, are the remnants of Guy's house and barn.
