Sliding from Before to After
A few morsels:
 * NJ & I: ANC 6D07 commissioner Edward Daniels put out the word on Facebook this week that "after numerous emails, walk-throughs, and (personal) hours spent watching the intersection from Slipstream, DDOT has finally responded and are working on a design and construction plan to install a traffic light at the intersection of New Jersey Ave & I Street SE." It's still a ways off, but there's no doubt that this intersection is a busy one and in need of some containment. (Wish I had a better picture to illustrate, but I usually try my best to let roads clear before I click the shutter. Which is not easy at New Jersey and I.) * BID ANNUAL REPORT: It's time once again for the Capitol Riverfront BID's annual report, which has all sorts of information about the neighborhood's progress, but I think it's worth highlighting some of the numbers. The BID estimates there are now 11,200 residents in 7,100 residential units, 78 restaurants, 44 shops and services, two grocery stores, and two professional sports stadiums (alas, the BID mucks with my statistics by also having Buzzard Point in its boundaries). I'm so old I remember a brief period when the resident count was about 300, if that.  * SLIDESHOWS: I got on a bit of a tear and finally figured out how to more easily create a "representative" photo slideshow for projects, using larger photos to illustrate a project's progress from before to after, without completely rebuilding the existing small-image'd photo archive. (Not much space in my brain for this level of creativity for, oh, the past 10 years or so.) You can see these on pages for active projects, like Capper Seniors 2.0 (which is a good example, since the slideshow captures the rise and fall and rise) and others on the homepage map. I'm going to work my way through older projects, which will take some time. This also means that it's going to be much quicker to update the project pages when I take new photos, since I've been manually adding the large photos each time I go out. Kind of wish I had figured this out a few years ago, when this crazy stretch of new construction was getting started, but, like I said, I've had a lot on my mind. You'll also note that there are mini-slideshows showing up randomly on the JDLand home page, as well as the sliders (which remain a very labor-intensive activity). I imagine some day I will redo the photo archive in larger versions, but not this week.

Note that Buzzard Point remains *not* a part of the JDLand coverage area. But not off limits for commenting.

As someone who lives in one of the buildings at NJ & I, and walks 10x more in the neighborhood than I drive, should I really be exited about this new traffic light? To me its just going to encourage speeding down NJ avenue, and likely will create conflicts at the NJ and K/L street 4 way stops as drivers will see a green light at M and will blow through those signs. It will also force pedestrians to wait for cars when crossing, when pedestrians currently 'legally,' have the right of way. People > Cars!

@NWtoSE - I was thinking about this while walking through last week. There is often so much foot traffic that often no cars can legally proceed for 30-60 seconds at a time, which leads to frustration and backups. Often a driver will advance into a crosswalk with people in it to steal the right-of-way, and drivers speed through the intersection trying to hit gaps in foot traffic. A traffic light will definitely be a minor inconvenience for pedestrians, but will hopefully increase safety by allowing regular movement for all users (as long as the light cycles every 20 seconds or so). For my part, I hope that at the same time as a light is installed, a protected intersection is also installed to reduce crossing distance. There is way too much open pavement for the intersection of two 2-lane roads.

@NWtoSE, I asked the ANC Commissioner about that issue on his Facebook page, and here is his reply (worth noting that there is still some planning to do.) : This intersection has been a topic of discussion and concern for years. If you sit for 10 minutes and watch the pedestrian-biker-vehicle interaction you will find that the 4-way stop does NOT work. Cars continue to drive straight through the intersection. Pedestrians are rushed to cross as cars pull into the box before pedestrians have cleared. There are near-misses every 5 minutes. It is a serious hazard, not to mention box trucks who continue to block the cross-walks as they unload to Harry's Liquor and the residential buildings nearest the intersection. Just this morning, I'm seeing that the flex-posts have, once again, been run over and removed. This is a serious hazard for anyone using this intersection. I will be letting all residents know when DDOT is ready to present the plan at the ANC meeting and I'll also be scheduling a session for residents.

The fact that it took this long to put a light at New Jersey and I is sort of just the epitome of the poor city planning in our neighborhood. Too bad it's too late to put some meaningful green space in. Don't even get me started on the clusterf**k that is I, K, and L streets between South Capitol and Half Streets. Not much better all the way to New Jersey even. It's sort of perplexes me when I see the construction permits that are issued that allows sidewalks, roads, and parking to be closed so often. It's actually sort of funny to watch the madness of pedestrians, construction equipment, delivery trucks, and residents leaving the garages on K between South Cap and Half st with the road being closed.

There's plenty to complain about when it comes to city planning (with this intersection, all discussions should start with that abomination of a building encroaching so much on NJ Ave and creating an even tighter intersection as a result). And there's even more to complain about when it comes to the response to apparent planning shortcomings (this intersection has been a problem for years - same with 4th and M). But overall, I think the neighborhood is awesome. More green space is always desired, but I understand the need to develop as much land as possible. Compared to other "up and coming neighborhoods" like NoMa (talk about no green space), I think the folks who planned out JDLand definitely made more good decisions than bad.

@GaryRKarr- Thanks for that response. I just hope they put some plans in place for the rest of the streets down to M, and also do something to limit people speeding down NJ Ave north of the light. Slightly outside of JDland, but very walkable from the neighborhood, awesome news that Call Your Mother is coming to Barracks Row.
