 Sliding from Before to After

You probably have to be a foodie for the title of this post to not sound like gibberish, but:
* ALL-DAY CAFE COMING TO NOVEL: Highly regarded restaurateur Erik Bruner-Yang (of Maketto and other ventures) will be opening a 3,000-square-foot "day-to-night neighborhood cafe concept" in the ground floor of Novel South Capitol, at the corner of South Capitol and I Streets, SE. The press release says that the space "will be integrated with" Novel's lobby but will be a "unique community gathering and dining experience" for all comers, not just residents. The as-yet-unnamed cafe will have "breakfast-oriented offerings, evening snacks, and craft cocktails," and is shooting for a late summer opening. More on Bruner-Yang's plans via Washingtonian.
* ROY BOYS: It has apparently been a good start for Roy Boys, the fried chicken and oyster restaurant that opened in Shaw a few months ago, because window signage being put up this morning--as well as this Washingtonian piece--confirm that a second location will open later this year in the old Justin's Cafe space on 1st Street SE between K and L. If you want to get a head start on licking your chops, here's the Shaw location's menu.
* SMORGASBURG: Starting on June 15, a pop-up outdoor food market known as "Smorgasburg" will offer food and beverages from 30 local vendors every summer Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm at Tingey Plaza, at New Jersey and Tingey. Eater DC has a list of the confirmed vendors, as of last week.
If you haven't been keeping up, the list of new food and beverage offerings coming to the neighborhood over the next year or so is starting to get kind of long, and as more buildings are completed, the list will probably grow. (West Half alone accounts for about 40 percent of the list, which they are now touting with their fence signage.) You can see my map of food options and then scroll down to the bottom to see the full future lineup.

Oh well, there goes my plan for a return to the svelte bod of my youth this summer.

Here's the Post article on Bud Johnson, the resident of Capitol Hill Tower who died after the assault outside Scarlet Oak: link

Lambau88 says: (5/22/19 8:03 AM)
WaPo says assault occurred at 10:30pm, but initial report said 3:30am. Any idea on why there is a discrepancy here?

Lambau88 says: (5/22/19 8:05 AM)
*11:30pm, not 10:30pm. But still...

JD says: (5/22/19 8:33 AM)
I confirmed with Commander Kane that the first report had the wrong time.

Anybody have an update on the reconstruction for the Senior Center?
It's nice that the debris has been removed, but the concrete pad with stairwells has been sitting untouched for a few months now.

conngs0 says: (5/22/19 11:00 AM)
I agree that it's strange that the senior center appears untouched (perhaps work is being done that isn't evident from outside the property?). My recollection is that the reconstruction is intended to resemble the prior building (ostensibly with functioning alarms and sprinklers, and maybe under competent management?!), but it's been awhile.

Personally, I think a simple re-build is a mistake that misses an opportunity to build something that provides a better living space for low-income seniors. I would hope that at least some consideration would be given to building a facility that could accommodate more individuals with better quality conditions, or is at least better equipped to lessen the chances of unauthorized people entering and staying on the premises. But, if the decision is to build the new building like the old one, you'd think the one benefit would be an expeditious construction.

Good news for I and NJ Ave residents: signs on door of I ST space has a dry cleaners coming to Park Chelsea. Welcome to the neighborhood.

JD says: (5/22/19 5:51 PM)
It will be the return of Congressional Cleaners (the place that used to be at Capitol Hill Tower), I'm told. And it shouldn't be too long before it opens.

conngs0 says: (5/23/19 11:39 AM)
The return of Congressional Cleaners if fantastic news! Same ownership and everything? I found them to be reasonably priced and very nice to work with (I'm not sure I appreciated when the lady tailoring my suits noticed that I had gained some weight, but I guess sometimes we all need a little push to the gym!).

There’s some signs up on the Tishman Speyer development on 1st and K/I that name it crossingdc.com. Unfortunately, the website doesn’t give much more than that. The sign does say that it’s a mixed use development. I for one am still hoping they go for a lot of retail, kinda like City Center in Chinatown, just with different stores.

Sounds like EBY has a Maketto + Wydown mashup planned. (Wydown runs the coffee shop that opens into the lobby of the Apollo, better known as the H St Whole Foods building.) Both are terrific places for all-day dining -- excited!
