Sliding from Before to After
Some new-ish retail items, in order of likely levels of reader ecstasy: * ATLAS BREW WORKS: Ivy City's brewery/tap room Atlas Brew Works announced last week that it is coming to JBG's West Half building next year, where it will occupy 4,500 square feet mere steps away from the Nats Park Center Field Gate. The new space, double the size of the Ivy City location, will also have a kitchen and a "limited food program" along side its brewery and 12-draft-line tap room. Atlas is the second announced retail offering at the non-box-like West Half building, along with the previously announced Commons Restaurant and its bakery/breakfast operation Mah-Ze-Dahr. * DISTRICT DOGS: The neighborhood's second-largest population gets a new retail offering in the coming days, as District Dogs has announced it will officially open its second full-service pet care facility in the ground floor of 1221 Van on Saturday, March 9. In a custom-built space that faces South Capitol Street just north of N, DD will offer daycare (with four separate playrooms), boarding, grooming, walking, sitting, and a "boutique retail shop." There will be an open house on Friday, March 8 from 5 to 9 pm, and services can be booked starting on the 9th. * EL BEBE: A reminder that Circa's tequila-and-taco sibling El Bebe is opening this Tuesday, Feb. 26, on the southwest corner of 1st and M in the ground floor of the 99 M office building. Here's the menu, should you wish to peruse in advance. * SHILLING PROGRESS: A reader passed along on Twitter photographic evidence that the Shilling Canning Company seems to at last be inching closer to opening in the ground floor of Arris, on Water Street across from District Winery. The placeholder web site says "Opening Spring 2019," and the restaurant is now hiring. * WELLS FARGO COMING DOWN THE STREET: If your heart was broken last summer when Wells Fargo closed its branch in the ground floor of 20 M, you can now perk back up, because it was announced last week that a Wells Fargo "Express Center" will be coming to the ground floor of the aforementioned 99 M office building. With this, 99 M's retail space is fully leased.

I peaked inside Shilling Canning Company when they were changing the window dressing and to the untrained eye it looks like there is still a lot of work to go. The Bower is now also officially moved out of the space on the corner, so Schilling will not, in fact, complete Arris's retail spaces. There is also a letter posted on the 18-8 space stating that Forest City is terminating the lease and they need to get their stuff outta there.
Edna says: (2/25/19 9:56 AM)
Sorry, I see now you mean *99 M* is on the southwest corner.... I thought you were describing the location of El Bebe within the building.
202_cyclist says: (2/25/19 10:56 AM)
We went to El Bebe on Friday night as guests for their pre-opening party. It is a very nice restaurant and I wish them success. We mostly focused on the cocktails (the smoking Paloma was a favorite) but both the food and cocktails were delicious. There are several mezcal drinks. The staff and bartenders are friendly and attentive and the interior of El Bebe is bright and festive. It will be a great addition to the neighborhood.
walt says: (2/25/19 11:13 AM)
When are we getting some real retail? There is literally nothing to do when walking around the neighborhood except stare in at diners or drinkers. There are maybe two stores and they only sell socks and dog bowls.
jdc says: (2/26/19 11:18 AM)
And bikes, right? I would love one of those new Target stores that are coming to DC, though I don't think the population of this area is quite large enough yet (especially the daytime crowd, which needs more of the empty office space to fill up).
RMP says: (2/26/19 1:29 PM)
Based on our current retail options, here's all of what I think you can buy in the neighborhood: Produce (Harris Teeter) Fancy produce (WF) Liquor (Harry's) Drugs (CVS) Bikes (Contes) Yoga gear (Lululemon) Women's clothes (Willow) Shoes (Pacers) AOC and RBG march (Steadfast supply) Dog toys (Unleashed) Vitamins (GNC) Cell phones (Sprint)

The latest on Dacha, which Washingtonian says "could" open late next month in its space on the river alongside The Salt Line and All-Purpose: link
JH says: (2/28/19 10:51 AM)
I walked by Dacha today, and they've torn up that entire little park area with the big yellow chairs and the ping pong tables. Is that where the actual beer garden seating is going to go or will it be on the plaza similar to Salt Line? They did have a lot of new trees they were getting ready to plant. Are there any renderings of that space?
bryan says: (2/28/19 10:54 AM)
Parents were recently notified that Eagle Academy, the charter school on New Jersey Avenue, will stay open one more year. It was originally scheduled to close after this school year. This news article also covers their struggle to find a new location in the neighborhood: link
202_cyclist says: (2/28/19 3:27 PM)
Well, no more Bryce. I know baseball is a business but that is pretty cold going to the Phillies. link
CJBabyDaddy says: (2/28/19 5:27 PM)
@202: My wife, who considered herself Bryce’s back-up Mom, will not be taking the Bryce-to-Philly news very well when she gets home from work this evening. Pray for me.
Mark says: (3/3/19 10:26 PM)
I wonder how the kid wearing the #34 "HERBER" jersey in that rendering feels about the Bryce news.
RMP says: (3/4/19 8:17 AM)
Big Stick is collecting unwanted Harper merch for charity. I think you get a free shot of something if you bring one in.
NavyYardNittany says: (3/4/19 3:02 PM)
Anyone know what’s happening on the lot next to the cooling station (between the parking lot by the church and the cooling station along L Street)? Bulldozer in there, gravel laid and a new culvert in place at the entrance. Thought I remembered something about condos taking the place of the old taxi/adult film theatre fire building but not sure. Awfully narrow space.
jdc says: (3/4/19 3:56 PM)
Correct, either condos or apartments. I believe chiller site is intended to be condos.
RMP says: (3/5/19 8:07 AM)
I am bummed to see that next week's ANC 6D meeting has been moved from DC Water to the Community Center. I was looking forward to getting a look inside the new building.
UpEarly says: (3/6/19 12:01 PM)
@NavyYardNittany - The one under construction at 37 L is condos (74 units). The WMATA chiller at the corner is also expected to be condos, but is large enough to go rental (161 units).
kalicki says: (3/6/19 2:04 PM)
Looks like they attached the lightup moon from the construction cranes to the roof of West Half permanently. Should be fun to see from the park.
JD says: (3/6/19 4:28 PM)
The lineup for the summer outdoor movie series at Canal Park has been announced: link
JD says: (3/6/19 4:29 PM)
And in non-tidbits, I believe 37 L is going to be rentals, not condos. Plus, the Nats have announced that rental lockers will be available outside the ballpark to house those bags that you can't bring in anymore: link
JNB says: (3/6/19 8:16 PM)
Quick clarification. 37 L is condo and 41 L is rental.
RMP says: (3/6/19 8:43 PM)
Yikes. The rental bins don't seem like a solution that anyone is going to be happy with.
202_cyclist says: (3/6/19 9:11 PM)
I’m looking forward to watching Bohemian Rhapsody at Canal Park this summer.
RMP says: (3/7/19 8:17 AM)
Got a mailer for Avidian which advertises itself as "Capitol Riverfront's only 100% brand new condominium". That doesn't seem quite right...
Ampersand says: (3/8/19 11:58 AM)
I stopped by to chat with Charles Allen at Lot 38 this morning, and we had a fun discussion of traffic and the Nats new bag policy. He's trying to get more support for postgame TCOs and also working with MPD for better red light/speeding enforcement. Unrelatedly, my friend who lives in 70 I St told me she encountered a ghost while walking her dog at 5:30am recently. As she told me: she was on I St near Canal Park when her dog suddenly spooked and she turned around to see a guy who wasn't there before. He was ashen and wearing all white. He walked with a heavy limp toward the Garrett, then turned the corner and seemed to disappear. So, keep an eye out!

Speaking of movies, when will ___ open? LOL
CJBabyDaddy says: (3/9/19 7:37 PM)
@spiritquality: Some of us are frustrated beyond words. Be a dear and bring you shins within kicking range. Thank you.
202_cyclist says: (3/10/19 9:37 PM)
Construction has stayed to build the 40-50 units of housing at 820 Potomac Ave SE, which was recently a surface parking lot.
spiritequality says: (3/10/19 10:18 PM)
@cjbabydaddy I would like to dream that one day I will ask that question and we will all get a surprising tidbit/breaking news announcement. No luck yet tho smh
jdc says: (3/12/19 8:45 AM)
They are prepping 37 L site for pile driving, so excavation can't be far behind.
202_cyclist says: (3/12/19 1:28 PM)
Just on the other side of South Capitol Street, it looks like there was soil testing this morning for the proposed residential development at 60 I St, SW, where there is currently a church. link
jdc says: (3/12/19 5:04 PM)
Interesting news. I am always amazed when I do street views from SW at how wonderful the tree canopy is over there and how lacking it is over here.
RMP says: (3/13/19 8:33 AM)
The eNvy sales folks sent out a rather unfortunate mailer. Keep an eye on your mailbox for a good chuckle.
willinrm says: (3/13/19 12:49 PM)
is the southwest blog done? no posts since dec 11th..... is it time for JD to expand ....!?!?!
202_cyclist says: (3/13/19 7:08 PM)
@RMP— I give up. What is the mistake on the ad?
RMP says: (3/13/19 8:42 PM)
@202_cyclist by my count they've only got a week left if they're going to do "winter 2019" move ins. There's also a fun little Easter Egg to find if you mistakenly type the URL from the mailer with an O instead of a zero, as I did the first time I saw it.
202_cyclist says: (3/14/19 10:56 AM)
RMP-- not to quibble but I assume Winter 2019 is Dec. 2019. There is still sufficient time to make that date.
JD says: (3/14/19 1:51 PM)
If you want to help support Van Ness Elementary via their silent auction, up for bid again this year is a walking tour in May with the entire staff of JDLand.com. There are 10 slots available that offer two tickets each. But you have to hurry--the auction ends at 9:30 pm Saturday, March 16! link
JES says: (3/14/19 2:27 PM)
FYI, we had Morini over to Velocity yesterday for an event and they confirmed that a version of Nicoletta is happening, just not in our neighborhood (it's going to Mt Vernon Triangle). They just posted a hiring event for it on Facebook. Text pasted below: Nicoletta Italian Kitchen ( link & Brew’d Coffee Bar ( link Now Hiring all Front and Back of House Positions. From the team that brought you Osteria Morini at the Navy Yard, comes DC’s exciting newest Italian neighborhood restaurant and coffee bar. Nicoletta Italian Kitchen and Brew’d will begin training April 1, and would love to have you be a part.
