If you're looking for things to do while counting the moments until 9 am on Oct. 18, here's some upcoming events you might want to put on your calendar:
* ANC 6D07 CANDIDATE FORUM: With Meredith Fascett stepping down from her seat as ANC 6D07's commissioner, the race is on to take the reins for the single member district that spans much of the JDLand Coverage Area. There are three candidates on the ballot--Edward Daniels, Brant Miller, and Patrick Witte.
If you want to meet these three and learn more about them and their views, there is a forum scheduled for Monday, Sept. 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, at the Capitol Quarter Community Center at 1000 5th St., SE. The Q&A and discussion will be led by members of the Arthur Capper Capitol Quarter Community Timebank.
(The other SMD that includes JDLand territory (as well as a portion of Southwest) is 6D02, where incumbent Cara Lea Shockley is again on the ballot, and is being challenged by Anna Forgie.
* DOUGLASS BRIDGE PUBLIC MEETINGS: DDOT is having two public meetings next week to "discuss the status of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project." There will be an overview and also discussion of training, job, and business opportunities. The first meeting, on Tuesday, Sept. 25, is from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at 3100 MLK Jr. Ave, SE, in Congress Heights. The second meeting, on Wednesday, Sept. 26, is from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the King Greenleaf Rec Center at 201 N St., SW. The same information will be presented at both meetings, and the project overview portion of the agendas is scheduled to start at 6:45 pm each day.
Oh, and on another subject, Taylor Gourmet is closing all of its stores. Which, one would assume, includes the one in the ground floor of F1rst.

I'm assuming they are going to have to completely rebuild, right? I do hope they are able to do so quickly, and that it doesn't diminish the amount of affordable units.

That's my assumption, too. By the time you demolish the upper floors, you don't have much left to go.

I think there will be a lot of eyes watching to be sure that the building (old or new) remains an affordable seniors housing offering.

I've always thought that Taylor Gourmet was a poor restaurant. Food wasn't great and portions were small for the cost. Hopefully we get a better sub shop in the neighborhood (one thing we're lacking)

Last time I went to the TG on 1st Street, just north of the ballpark, I was unsettled by the number of flies I saw buzzing around the food prep area and the fact that the staff seemed unperturbed that they were outnumbered.

I guess I am the only one who liked Taylor Gourmet. I've tried numerous sandwiches and was always happy with them. I also found the portion sizes very good. Jimmy Johns is OK, but to me it's a step above the current Subway (which has gone downhill as a chain IMO). I thought Taylor was a definite step above Jimmy Johns. So, that makes two 'busts' for the neighborhood - Chix and Taylor, the former which still is an empty storefront. Regarding Capper, I wonder if in re-building they could possibly make the place even larger to offer more housing for seniors? Or incorporate any ground-floor retail. The neighborhood has changed a lot since that building opened.

DC Fire transported an elderly man found this AM inside the collapsed Senior apartment complex. Sources say he was a resident. He has non life threatening injuries. link

Pretty interesting story about the individual found in the Capper Senior apartment complex. I'm glad the gentleman they found did not have any life threatening injuries. I'm also happy to see Mr. Allen taking up the properly urgent tone to get answers for how this happened (on top of how a fire of this magnitude was caused in the first place). However, it's not like folks haven't been clear in communicating that the quality of oversight of the management company in charge this property and other properties in the neighborhood has been woefully lacking. It's a shame that one building has been destroyed by neglect, but here's hoping that the incident will result in the increased quality of stewardship over the other public housing facilities in the neighborhood and around the city.

Bummed that Taylor is closing. Great burgers, good, occasionally great sandwiches, and the arincini was awesome. Service stunk, but welcome to Navy Yard. A Jimmy John's would be a welcome replacement.

With regard to the gentleman in Capper, that's appalling, infuriating, and so very sad. Knowing that there was someone suffering that much two blocks away from where we were sitting, eating, relaxing all weekend makes my stomach turn.

Crazy that a person was found this much later, thank God it sounds like he's ok by some miracle.

Regarding TG, I loved them, very quality ingredients and product. Agree service wasn't stellar, but man, that seasonal spicy meatball sub was incredible.

Also, three fails for the neighborhood: 100 Montaditos. Hopefully the ramen place opens soon!

I never found service at TG bad - maybe it was not stellar, but everyone was always friendly and things moved quick. Seems like another victim of expanding to make money while all the while losing more and more money. Expansion is not the answer restaurateurs!

Taylor Gourmet was never bad. But it sure was better when it was just the H Street and City Vista stores. I believe they changed roll suppliers when they expanded beyond that (it was previously a bakery from Philadelphia), which caused them to slide into mediocrity. The arancini were always fantastic though, and I'll definitely miss those!

In addition to the neighborhood restaurant failures already mentioned, don't forget Park Tavern / Il Parco. I'm super excited to see how Wise Guys does in that spot. As for the recently-vacated Taylor location, and speaking of places that don't do well when they expend too ambitiously, I think Capriotti's would fit much better in Navy Yard than the strange spot on M Street they tried to occupy before. Otherwise, no objections to Jimmy Johns or similar.

+1 to barbershop! I currently walk up to Jajo barbershop in Eastern Market, which gives a good $20 haircut if you're looking.

Has there been any update on what's happening to Chix? That's prime location to be sitting closed for a while now (at least a year+)

Jajo, cool. I'll have to check it out. I've been going to capitol barber & stylist over by union station. They're $22 or something. It doesn't really matter what kind of haircut you want. They're going to cut it short, it's just a matter of how short.
