Other than the kids having now headed back to school, there isn't much news, or even many tidbits, except for:
* DRYY: The long-empty retail space fronting M Street between the 55 M lobby and the subway station now has funky new signage, announcing that Dryy, "full service garment care," is coming soon. This will bring the number of garment care options in the neighborhood back to two, along with Wells Cleaners at the Yards.
* WISEGUY: Intrepid JDLand commenter JES tweeted these photos of the Wiseguy space at Canal Park, showing both the pizza operation and the gelato operation. I had not thought about Wiseguy's pay-at-the-counter setup, which actually might be a better use of the space than previous incarnations. As for when it will open, We Shall See.
* PAVING: CSX announced that paving of the 200 and 300 blocks of Virginia Avenue is next on the tunnel-wrapping-up agenda (and I saw that the 200 block got its blacktop yesterday). Also coming this week, weather permitting, is the paving of the "specially designed permeable bicycle lane surface." This side path will run from the 200 block all the way to 11th Street (along the north side of Virginia Avenue Park).
Other than that, I got nuthin'.

Thanks for the updates! Count me amongst those who are cautiously optimistic that Wiseguys might actually be successful in that Canal Park spot. That building seems to pose some challenges, but I agree with you that the pay-at-the-counter configuration might be the best way to go. Either way, I'm excited about a(nother) nearby takeaway pizza options, especially because I understand that Wiseguy's style is more conducive to bringing home (as opposed to the Neapolitan-like pizza, which really has to be eaten on site in order to fully enjoy).

One thing that's interesting to me is that, in addition to the soda fountain, the pizza side also has a tap system of some sort installed. But without an ABRA placard, are they gonna have beer? I originally guessed it was for nitro coffee, but since it's on the pizza counter side and not the coffee/gelato counter side, I'm not sure.

I still think for anything to be really successful in that Canal Park spot, some of the buildings need to go up along the east side of the park to create more foot traffic. That restaurant spot is so close and yet so isolated from the New Jersey Metro entrance, the average person visiting the neighborhood comes out of that station and has no idea there's anything behind the CVS building. They're gonna go south across M and head towards the Blue Jacket area or towards the stadium and those restaurants. The only reason I ever go east from NJ/M intersection is heading towards HT, which no one but someone living here is gonna do. Aside from ice skating that area is pretty dead compared to what it will be when all those buildings on the east side of Canal Park go up. Hopefully The Harlow will start changing that soon!

I think a more grab and go concept will actually do well there. Pizza by the slice and coffee will do gangbusters when the rink is open. I'm curious about beer offerings because in the summer, they'll have that large patio to sustain, and a slice of pizza and a beer corners the baseball fan market quite well I would think.

One thing to note about the "can you get a baseball game crowd" to make your restaurant successful argument, is that with all the apartments going up over the past few years (and under construction) it should make the argument moot.

There's probably a bit south of 10,000 residents in the neighborhood, which might get up to what, 20,000ish? at full build out (with buzzard point, which is in the BID boudnaries but not JDland). Nats park seats 41,000 though. So even at full build out I think restaurants are going to rely on baseball crowds.

I peaked in the window of TSTSNBN and don't have much faith so I'm going to go with November 7th in the pool. Also big party on Sept 6th at the dog park next door per the Capitol Riverfront newsletter.

The new dog park at the corner of New Jersey and H now has a name and an official opening date. It's being called the Bark and Go Dog Park, and the "Unleashing Ceremony" is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6 pm. All are invited. Except probably my cats.

Maybe someone with a passing familiarity with construction can answer my question - for the project that will occupy Square 696, construction right now consists of excavating the site and pouring concrete to make these square/rectangular blocks that are seemingly randomly situated throughout the site (the eastern portion right now). I had expected the foundation of a building to be level, such as the bottom floor of a parking garage. I do not recall such 'blocks' in other construction in the area, but may just have missed this step. Thoughts?

@jdc, Yup they're "pilings," like stilts that reach down through soft dirt to rock/soil below that can support the weight of a building. One of my favorite books as a kid has terrific illustrations of how they work: link

@202_cyclist: The additional 14-unit building at 816 Potomac Avenue SE will flank the existing building at 816 under renovation now. There are plans to build another building on the existing building’s east side, plus the new building at 818 Potomac Avenue SE (at the corner of Potomac and 9th Street SE). That’s my corner of SoChill.

Just think of it as a building sammich. Not sure how it will look in the end, but we’ve lived in our long-forgotten corner of SoChill for 10 years and any development is better that the broken concrete parking lots for Navy Yard commuters.

It's not as exciting as a new tower crane, but it looks from the building permits feed that Novel South Capitol has a restaurant tenant lined up:
INTERIOR WORK ONLY FULL-SERVICE RESTAURANT WITH 78 SEATS AND 80 OCCUPANTS INDOORS. WITH BUILDOUT OF AN EXISTING COLD DARK SHELL STRUCTURE AT THE GROUND FLOOR OF THE 2 I STREET BUILDING PERMIT B1713380. THE BUILDOUT IS FOR A RETAIL KITCHEN.

Also, 300 M is getting another medical office according to building permits, this one being the Advanced Center for Orthopedics.
