Half at O, Looking North-Northeast (see more)

It's been a rumor rampant in the JDLand comment threads for a number of weeks, but this morning signage went up confirming that Wiseguy Pizza will be coming to the former Park Tavern/Il Parco space in Canal Park.
What was not rumored is that there will also be a gelato and coffee offering as well, which should go well with the space's location immediately next to the park's fountains in summer and ice rink in winter.
A JDLand reader on Twitter reports that the workers hanging the signs said that Wiseguy would open in about three months, but We Shall See.
This will be Wiseguy's third DC location.
In other neighborhood pizza news:
* All-Purpose tweeted last week that its Dock 79 location is opening "this February," and there is now a "Coming Soon" badge for it on its web site.
* Oath Pizza also now has a Coming Soon page for its location on M Street next to Bethesda Bagels in the ground floor of Insignia on M. interested parties can sign up for an invite to their (undated) grand opening.
* The build-out at Declaration in the ground floor of F1rst seems to be proceeding apace, as this photo from last weekend shows.

"And in non-pizza restaurant news..." was this said jokingly? Isn't this also a pizza place?

JD says: (1/27/18 7:15 PM)
Oops. I was keying on the "wider Philly inspired menu" from the announcement.

conngs0 says: (1/27/18 9:44 PM)
Well, if these businesses can’t make it work at Canal Park, I don’t know what will. Either way, I’m looking forward to figuring out the best neighborhood pizza place (and the debates on the same subject)!

JES says: (1/28/18 12:46 PM)
Is wiseguy gonna keep the bar? I would assume so, but wondering if anyone knows for sure.

RMP says: (1/28/18 1:58 PM)
So is ALTANi going to be run by Wiseguy or is it a completely separate business? Regardless, 2018 is definitely turning out to be the year of coffee and pizza.

Lambau88 says: (1/28/18 10:16 PM)
Long time reader, first time commenter. Love the site.

Anyone have info on wiseguy’s timeline or on Eagle Academy move?

Also, any sense of retail/dining development connected to United’s new home at Buzzard Point? ... can’t bring myself to call it Audi Field yet.

202_cyclist says: (1/28/18 11:16 PM)
@Lambau88:

Welcome to the site! JD does an excellent job for JD Land/Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard but for updates on the other side of So. Capitol Street, I suggest reading Southwest the Little Quadrant That Could.

link

Basically, however, King Ribs is the only place you need to go in Southwest.

202_cyclist says: (1/28/18 11:19 PM)
But while we are venturing to the other side of So. Capitol Street, does anyone know what will happen to the heliport next to the Frederick Douglass bridge? I can’t imagine it is going to stay there much longer as the area around Buzzard Point (and 71 Potomac) comtinue to develop.

Lambau88 says: (1/29/18 7:17 AM)
@202_cyclist thank you!

dude says: (1/29/18 8:43 AM)
It simply has to be better than Eww Parco, right? Hope so.

Lambau88 says: (1/29/18 8:53 AM)
@dude - Wiseguys should certainly be a step up. The Chinatown location is delicious - I've been many times. A friend in VA says that the Rosslyn spot is not nearly as good, but I'm holding out hope this one will be solid. I think there's another location in Foggy Bottom but I can't speak to that one...

jdc says: (1/29/18 9:21 AM)
Urban Turf has a nicely article with photos summarizing all of the apartments coming to JDLand. link

RMP says: (1/29/18 10:02 AM)
The Urban Turf article says the Chiller Site is going to have a 500 sq ft office for Metro employees. 500 sq ft isn't much. Any idea who is going to actually work there?

JD says: (1/29/18 10:06 AM)
Probably the Metro guys who will have the service the chiller operations that will still be there (they will be built into the new building).

Westnorth says: (1/29/18 11:51 AM)
@rmp: More of a storage facility or break room than an office.

Section314 says: (1/29/18 1:25 PM)
Meredith Fascett just tweeted about two upcoming information meetings regarding the Meridian and Tishman Speyer developments. Meetings are coming up next week.

JD says: (1/29/18 2:48 PM)
Speaking of next week, I'm finally getting my hip surgery (Feb. 9), so things might quiet down a bit after that. At least anything that requires my getting around.

NavyYardGuy says: (1/29/18 3:22 PM)
Hope the surgery goes well JD.

202_cyclist says: (1/29/18 3:28 PM)
JD-- I hope you have a quick and complete recovery.

Also, it is just over two months away-- does anyone know when Nationals single game tickets go on sale? I think in previous years they went on sale around the middle of February.

dcgent says: (1/29/18 3:31 PM)
Speaking of Nats tickets, i wonder if they will still offer the neighborhood/flex voucher program that we chose last year. they warned us they may not when trying to sell us a season or half-season plan.

walt says: (1/29/18 3:38 PM)
Good luck JD.

As for all the high rises, I've recently reached the conclusion that the high rise section south of the freeway should be called something different from the townhouse section. Because the two sections are so different demographically and visually.

Of course I think townhouse section should be "Navy Yard" because it is closer to the Navy Yard and because it is more in keeping with the original character of the Navy Yard Neighborhood.

The high rise section should be "Capitol Riverfront" or even "Nats Town".

@JD, any thoughts on doubling your neighborhoods served while maintaining the same geo area?

greb22 says: (1/29/18 4:13 PM)
I call the highrise area the college dorm area.

JD says: (1/29/18 4:14 PM)
I am so not getting into any sort of naming discussions. :-)

202_cyclist says: (1/29/18 4:21 PM)
Besides, if we renamed it, it would be "Nats beat the Phillies Town."

Besides, I think the name Mr. JD Land gave, SoCHill (South of Capitol Hill) would be the best choice.

JD says: (1/29/18 4:36 PM)
By the way, catching up on the movie theater stuff--there's an easement that I guess needs federal approval, and it's getting caught up in bureaucratic muck. But at least that part of the process looks ready to happen soon (getting the needed land from DC Water). The original contract with Icon Showplace has expired, though--so the next thing to watch would be whether there's a quick new contract once the land stuff is finally sorted.

So, it's not dead, but the snail's pace of the many moving parts is making it all continue to drag out.

malatesta says: (1/29/18 5:59 PM)
@202_cyclist:

I like this, mostly because it opens up the possibility that Buzzard Point gets rebranded as WeSoCHill (the theme songs write themselves)

jdc says: (1/30/18 8:57 AM)
Speaking of SW, coming over the Yellow Line bridge this morning I was able to see the top of Audi field peaking over the trees. I didn't realize how tall it would be (lack of foliage helps, though).

NavyYardNittany says: (1/30/18 2:08 PM)
greb22 says: (1/29/18 4:13 PM)
I call the highrise area the college dorm area.

I've been out of college for 22 years now, and live in one of those high rises. Not many college folks or even recent college grads in One Hill South, Parc Riverside, Velocity, etc. So your naming convention seems a bit off.

CHTexpat says: (1/30/18 6:58 PM)
The whole neighborhood should adopt Navy Yard (just like Capitol Hill)... The BID might do a great job, but their manufactured place naming does not work...

JacquesOfAllTrades says: (2/2/18 10:53 AM)
Wiseguys is a great pull for that location. I'm curious as to whether they'll keep the bar/liquor license, as their other locations are all just counter service with varying amounts of seating.

It's also a much more daytime-focused restaurant than what's been in there before, so they may be thinking that the primary customers are between park-goers and USDOT/biz folks running out for a quick lunch, and people grabbing a quick pre-game bite, rather than a dinner/bar crowd.
