Some pronouncements that have been muchly anticipated:
* Taylor Gourmet opens tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 23, on 1st St. SE between M and N, at 11 am.
* District Winery opens on Aug. 30. And its restaurant is apparently named Ana, as in Anacostia. (WTOP)
(This is short, because I saw the sun disappear yesterday, and am still out of pocket.)

The wait was worth it, IMO. Taylor Gourmet sandwich is delicious. Also, all of those new restaurants are definitely at a disadvantage until 99 M street allows the western sidewalk to reopen. It adds a bit of time to properly walked around the sidewalk closure, as opposed to crossing the street midblock. To avoid that on the way back to the office, I came up Half Street. Big mistake. What a mess, between the deep pit construction on both sides and the endless dump trucks and concrete mixers, it is extremely unsafe to walk. I did notice how the F1st apartments are actually more impressive when viewed from Half St - from First, it seems a much smaller building.

While on the topic of food, I spoke with someone working at the vegetable garden boxes at Van Ness elementary school yesterday morning during my run. The person I spoke with said that there will be an opportunity to volunteer and plant fall vegetables on Sept. 16 if you are interested in helping out. This is a great opportunity to help get students excited about healthy food and their surrounding environment.

Just home from our first try at Taylor Gourmet. Great sandwiches (Zucko and Cedar) and my wife liked the risotto balls too. A little pricy of course ($13 for an 11" sandwich), but that's how it goes.

They were giving out free bags of Cracker Jack so that's a bonus.

I'm excited to try Taylor Gourmet a few dozen more times. After that I am most excited for Rasa, and I hope it doesn't disappoint. I'd say I'm excited for Juice Laundry, but it's a bit of a walk and it seems to be pricier than I'd do on a weekly basis. So my frequency there may be lower.

How often do people eat out (even for fast-casual)? I would do it every day if I didn't have retirement goals. Is it normal to spend $10, $20, or even $30 per day on lunch around here? Please share how often and how much you spend for lunch.

I'd say I eat out at a Taylor Gourmet-type establishment once or twice a month. Spend no more than $15. Ever couple months I may do something like Gorden Biersch and sit down and spend closer to $30, especially if I include a drink.

I limit myself on that type of spending and would say that I eat at that type of establishment maybe 3 times a month and that includes lunch and dinner, but I would say that at least half of the people in my office grab lunch from somewhere similar everyday.

I appreciate Walt's strict adherence to those retirement goals. Very admirable. The daily outing to lunch (almost always under $10 unless there's some sort of special occasion) is definitely the norm in my office as well. I usually grab dinner outside of the house at least once during the work week (~$15) and once on weekends ($30+ because of drinks). Speaking of another place to spend a little too much on food and drink, here's a write up on District Winery!

I'm with you JD.

I maybe go out to lunch once a month (but for something like Subway or Chipotle). We probably go out to dinner once a week spending between $15-35.

But, maybe the people that go out to lunch every day don't spend money on anything else? Unlikely I guess, but possible. I'd guess that most people spend money on stuff that other people think is an unwise use of money. Like going to baseball games when you can watch them on TV for a fraction of the cost. But that's not going to stop me from going once a homestand on average.

I think they're both delicious but the law of diminishing returns kicks in quickly once they're offered for a certain price ($3 for coffee and $20ish for a bottle of wine). Regardless, no need to apologize for not giving District Winery a huge splash. First, this is your blog and you should lay out the virtual red carpet for whomever you want. Second, they certainly should've invited someone as important to the community as you for a tour!

dude, one of my favorite things about this neighborhood is observing what folks spend their money on. There's definitely a huge variance. One of my favorite things to do is buy a double scoop waffle cone from Ice Cream Jubilee and walk by the Vida Gym (or the free exercise classes at Yards Park). I think those exercisers are getting ripped off just as much as I'm sure they think I am getting ripped off by my delicious (and overpriced, but I don't care) ice cream cone!

One of the nice benefits of a neighborhood like ours with two metro stations close by and excellent bike/pedestrian and bus service is it lets many people live without a car. The total cost of car ownership is estimated to be $6,000 - $7,000. If a household is able to forego owning a car, that is more discretionary money to spend on things such as lunch.

As for me, I eat from the food trucks usually four days per week but I don't buy sodas, coffee, snacks, etc.. throughout the day.

Mr. JDLand was quite the wine connoisseur, whereas I delighted in taking a sip and saying (like Ollie the weatherman), "TASTES LIKE GRAPES!"

Bill was really looking forward to the winery, so that's why it's a little more of a raw subject for me compared to other things.

I think it's pretty lousy that JD didn't get invited for even a tour, especially since every other writer/blogger/photographer on the internet seemed to get a sneak peak.

I've wondered for a while to what extent the winery will care about neighborhood business vs. being a destination kind of place. Obviously they're going all-in on weddings, which I'm sure they'll have plenty of success with. Hopefully they don't forget about us.

Stopped by District Winery with a friend. We did 2 different tastings. A couple of bad wines, most ok, and 1 or 2 that we liked. Looked at the bar menu... The one we liked is $17 a glass. Don't think we'll be back anytime soon.

My wine-taste buds are too unsophisticated to know any more than whether or not I'd like more of what I'm drinking.

Mrs. CJBD and I dined at the Winery on opening night and thought the kitchen knocked it out of the park.

We're looking forward to a return visit -- even if requires us to endure being creeped out again by a portrait of the current US president.

I've been to Juice Laundry a few times and I'm a fan! The smoothies are delicious and fresh. It's not cheap but I imagine the rent on that space ain't cheap either. They are also the newest business to be completely cashless.
