Sliding from Before to After
The Nats continue their even-year streak of making it to the playoffs, and will be facing the Los Angeles Dodgers at Nationals Park for the first two games of the series. Game 1 is Friday, Oct. 7 at 5:38 pm, and Game 2 is Saturday, Oct. 8 at 4:08 pm. (If necessary, Game 5 will be on Thursday, Oct. 13. But let's not think about that right now.) GETTING THERE: If you are needing the latest news about getting to and from the ballpark for Friday and Saturday's games. Dr. Gridlock has put together this rundown. (You'd like to believe that those start times will prevent a Metro-closing-time-apocalypse, but some of us do remember the 2018-inning 2014 playoff game...) WHERE TO EAT: My food map will help you if you haven't wandered around lately. These are the special events I've heard about so far, but keep checking back, as I will update here when more information comes along: YARDS PARK PEP RALLY: The Capitol Riverfront BID is hosting a free Playoffs Pep Rally at the Yards Park on Friday, from 3 pm to 5:30 pm, with live music from the Lloyd Dobler Effect, as well as games and activities. Food and beverages will be for sale from Bluejacket, Agua 301, Ice Cream Jubilee, and others. FAIRGROUNDS DOINGS: The Bullpen will be fully operational on Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 1 pm on Friday and noon on Saturday, and admission is free. There will be live music before and after games, and if you don't have a ticket to get into the ballpark, the Bullpen will be airing the home games with sound on a 9'-12' LED screen. And a happy hour during innings 3 through 7 will offer all drinks for $5. DUE SOUTH OFFERINGS: There will be a special "curated playoff menu" inside the restaurant at 301 Water St. SE, opening at 11 am every day, while the "outdoor bar and grill" will have draft beer and grab-and-go eats, starting three hours before first patch. And the Nats games will be shown on all TVs, with sound. ALL THINGS GO FALL CLASSIC: Because the area right near the ballpark won't be hopping enough on Saturday, note that there will also be the All Things Go Fall Classic music festival underway at Spooky Park, aka the huge open space south of M and between 1st and New Jersey. It runs from 11:30 am to about 10:30 pm, and it ain't free. (I'll save my rant for the dubbing of the Spooky Park site as "Yards Park" for another day.)

NATS! NATS! NATS! Game 1 should be great with the Scherzer - Kershaw matchup. It's outside of the greater JD Land area but the Washington Business Journal has a good article about the transportation enhancements for the DC United stadium. It is good to see the commitment to bike infrastructure. link
Chaifetz10 says: (10/6/16 11:31 AM)
Non baseball related, but looks like they've started placing Jersey barriers at the DC Water HQ site.
JD says: (10/6/16 11:32 AM)
With somewhat poor timing, I'm going to be pretty out of pocket in the next few days. So behave, and bring the Nats home.
JD says: (10/6/16 11:33 AM)
But in other news, look for the scaffolding around the Metro entrance at New Jersey and M to be coming down soon (permit approved for after-hours work).
RMP says: (10/6/16 11:43 AM)
"I'll save my rant for the dubbing of the Spooky Park site as "Yards Park" for another day." Now this I look forward to. Can you also include a rant about dubbing parking lots H/I as "Yarks Park" like they did for VegFest and probably all the other events over there?
202_cyclist says: (10/6/16 11:44 AM)
Chaifetz10: Thanks for the update. I noted that I saw construction-related activity at this site last week or the week before.
Chaifetz10 says: (10/6/16 12:05 PM)
@202 I still don't think that was major work associated with the new building though. Looked more like a minor utility repair or relocation on the East side. Also, the equipment that was there (the small backhoe) was there for months now and has since been removed. They were still parking DC water vehicles around the building as of Tuesday night. Probably not worth a major debate either way as it looks like the major work will be underway soon...
JES says: (10/6/16 12:30 PM)
It was 18 innings, not 20. And i think my toes are STILL numb from that sh*t.
dude says: (10/6/16 10:11 PM)
I love when baseball games start lasting as long as cricket matches. The worst part of that game was that I was in the last row of section 141. Probably the worst seats in the park, but that's how it goes. I'll see everyone in 319 tomorrow and 101 on Saturday!
conngs0 says: (10/7/16 6:48 AM)
Ha! The worst part about that game was the Nats tried to play hero-ball for the last nine innings rather than grind out at-bats and plate a run at all costs. The good news is that if faced with the same situation again, at least Yusmeiro Petit can't come in to shut down the Nats in extras!
202_cyclist says: (10/7/16 8:04 AM)
Where is the unofficial JD Land gathering place to watch the game this evening? The Brig?
jdc says: (10/7/16 9:32 AM)
Update: sidewalks on M and Half St. by Homewood Suites have reopened.
202_cyclist says: (10/7/16 10:24 AM)
UPDATE II: There are bike lanes on NJ Ave now!
202_cyclist says: (10/7/16 10:28 AM)
UPDATE III: During my run this morning, I saw one of the owners for 716 and 718 L Street SE (i.e. across from the blue castle) outside of the building. He said that he hopes to get a restaurant in that space. The sidewalk is pretty wide there, so it would be a good location for outside dining.
Ampersand says: (10/7/16 1:40 PM)
@202_cyclist - I rode on the new lane last night! As of 10pm, there appeared to only be a lane on the SE-bound side, though. I assume there will be one on the NW-bound side, but the parking lane will have to go away so maybe it will take a bit longer? I liked how wide the lane was, too.
dude says: (10/9/16 8:25 PM)
That's it, I'm finally off the hook. Nats were 0-5 in playoff homes games with me in attendance prior to today (that's right, I missed that Werth walk off homer).
conngs0 says: (10/11/16 9:28 AM)
202, what makes that blast from Werth even more amazing is that it merely set the tone for the top of the 9th inning! I can't think of another time I've seen the Nats finish a team in a critical game like they just did to the Dodgers. Regardless of what happens this year, that's a big step in the team's development. They need to keep this game in mind every time they get an early one or two run lead. Now they just need to (finally) get a strong performance from a starting pitcher tonight and finish off the series!
JD says: (10/11/16 9:31 AM)
I've been in Ireland since Thursday (now on the plane back) and stayed up well past my bedtime to make it through to the end of yesterday's game, and was rewarded.
Chaifetz10 says: (10/12/16 11:53 AM)
Minor observation: The Joule apartments website no longer appears to be working; however, Bozzuto has link up and running with the same content. Perhaps they decided on a name change?
Ampersand says: (10/12/16 12:40 PM)
Somewhat related to the 'hood: All-Purpose was named Tom Sietsema's favorite restaurant in the DC area (Pineapple and Pearls was #2). I haven't been to the original yet, but I'm very much looking forward to it opening here! Hopefully the quality is maintained at the new site.
202_cyclist says: (10/12/16 5:40 PM)
Dang! Why pay $150 when you can bike to Nats Park instead. link
Chaifetz10 says: (10/13/16 8:33 AM)
Steel is starting to rise at the new District Winery.
dude says: (10/13/16 10:15 AM)
@202 yeah that's a bit crazy. Sucks to not live local I guess. Look for me on 112 to tonight!
202_cyclist says: (10/13/16 12:54 PM)
Also, it looked like there was soil boring equipment at the WASA site this morning.
202_cyclist says: (10/14/16 7:31 AM)
Well, this sums it up: link . I suppose we are all Cubs fans now.
JD says: (10/14/16 8:39 AM)
When the year started, I had no expectation the Nats would be any good.
Then they had a great 9/10s of a season. Then they clearly started tailing off at the end of the regular season. Then Strasburg and Ramos got hurt.
I'm disappointed, because they certainly could have won last night (lots of men left on base, boneheaded base-running maneuvers, etc), but this season always felt like more than the sum of its parts.
Go Cubs. :)
Chaifetz10 says: (10/14/16 9:26 AM)
As a St. Louis transplant, I don't think I could ever root for the Cubs. For me it's now the Blue Jays or Indians! Oh, Dock 79 is working on some more amenities on the South side of the site. Some additional sidewalks were poured and it looks like they're doing some soil core sampling as well. Best guess is they're going to build a dog park, volleyball courts, etc while still doing the pre-construction work for 25 Potomac.
202_cyclist says: (10/14/16 10:25 AM)
JD: Please, I implore you-- can you make a new post today (panda cubs, baby elephants, funny cat photos) so we don't have to be reminded of Nationals inglorious exit a the top of the page every time we check your blog. Thank you, The neighborhood
JD says: (10/14/16 10:30 AM)
@202, yeah, I will either today or tomorrow. Been an intense few weeks in my world, hoping to have things settle a little in coming days.
