Another construction project is now confirmed to be starting soon, with the announcement earlier this month that Skanska has signed a $60 million contract to build the new DC Water headquarters on the banks of the Anacostia River.
For those who haven't been following along, the new building will be built as a "surround" to the existing red-brick O Street Pumping Station (no, not the historic Main Pumping Station).
Skanska's press release says that construction will begin this year, and is slated for completion in late 2017.
The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail bridge between the Yards Park and Diamond Teague Park will offer a prime viewing location for the construction, as you can see in the latest renderings passed along with the announcement (and I've included one of my shots of the existing O Street building for those who need refreshing).
This is the second office project that Skanska currently has in the neighborhood, as it is building the on-spec 99 M office building a few blocks to the north.

This is a great looking modern building. It is a nice change from all of the 10-story square boxes that usually get built in DC.

I hate to be a downer because the building is really beautiful and will add a lot to the area, but we've had 3 increases to our water bill in the past 2 years. Is there typically an analysis when rate hikes are being considered to determine whether they really need a building THIS fancy?
And I left my hose on overnight last week so now I'm going to have a huge bill! :(

@Walt I think maybe a majority of the cost savings can really come from effective contracting and buying of bulk materials for this. I doubt that the cost of this building has impact on water rates. Like 202 said I am very happy to see such a beautiful design for the waterfront especially considering the eyesore there now. Now lets DO hope for no cost overruns or delays!

It's just a surround, so little excavation, and only six-ish stories tall. 17 months to do that doesn't seem impossible.

Super excited for this building as well. I think the modern-looking HQ next to the historic pumping station will be a great contrast. However, JES is absolutely correct that DC Water shouldn't get their shiny new building until they vacate the theater site.

This isn't driving the rate hikes. The massive, needed, and legally required tunnel projects are driving the rate hikes.

Relocating DC Water's HQ from Blue Plains to somewhere else opens up more space in Blue Plains for stuff that can only happen there (e.g. sewage treatment). So that part makes sense.

Once you decide to move, where do you move to? Given that they're building on a site they already own, they don't have any land costs. That's a plus. They're also building for the longer term instead of leasing space - also a plus.

And also, just because the building looks fancy doesn't mean it's actually more expensive to either build or operate than something that might look more mundane.

Buy a DC Water Bond and use the interest payments to pay your water bill. Revenge investing.
