Papers have gone up to cover the windows of the Park Tavern at 2nd and M in Canal Park, with a sign up saying they are closed for renovations. I've sent an inquiry (given that the restaurant's social media feeds and web site remain silent), but my understanding from other sources is that this is more than just a freshening of the decor--one reader says he was told that it will be reopening as a pizza-based venue.
With construction underway on the Canal Park ice rink, scheduled to officially open for the season on Nov. 14, this would seem to be a good time frame for a retooling.

In the meantime, over on Half Street just south of the Metro entrance at M Street, Buffalo Wild Wings is looking close to opening. A worker told me that staff training is expected to start this week, with November 17 being the *targeted* opening date. Though, of course (all together now), We Shall See.
UPDATE: It actually looks like Nov. 16 will be the grand opening (the date I heard many moons ago), with this mailing providing the big hint but also according to sources In the Know.
(PS: There are tentative thoughts about a JDLand happy hour in the coming weeks, probably at BWW. More as the schedule becomes clear.)

Best of luck to Park Tavern. I went a few times over the past few years and every time it was crap. Bad service, subpar food, and high prices. Maybe they'll be better at being a pizza joint.

I agree with Keith - I have Park Tavern several tries, but never really had a good experience. It's a nice looking place in a good location, so I good their retooling works out!

I agree. It's been bad service and always out of one key ingredient. I can't chalk that up to anything other than extremely poor management. A good pizza joint would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood -- I hope they can make some decent NY Style pizza. Justin's has great pizza, but it's a bit overwhelming fighting the young sports-crowd if you just want a slice of pizza.

Totally agree with all that's been said. Good luck to Park Tavern at turning it around. Pizza would be a good compliment to the ice rink in a few weeks! And there's definitely a niche to be filled for quality takeaway pizza - good for PT to try to get in the game before Nicoletta gets going.

Justin's Pizza ain't bad, but Scarlet Oak's pizza is leagues better for about the same price.

Will the management be changing over along with this? Or is it "meet the new boss, same as the old boss?" And, wasn't the management of Park Tavern the same crew that had had some bankruptcy troubles a while back?

coffeexdrinker, it is indeed the same ownership group that was in that Chapter 11 saga with the former owner. The ordeal basically caused all of the restaurants in the group to stay in limbo for quite awhile. That was more damaging for some as opposed to others (Chesapeake Room closed for a brief "refresh" too), but it seems to have affected Park Tavern the most. I think the ownership situation is more or less settled now, so hopefully that will allow the managers to make some positive changes and allocate resources where they need to be allocated.

Yeah, Willie's and Park Tavern are owned/run by the same restaurant group, and the differences in the quality of the food, service, and overall experience was night and day (Willie's has always been a generally positive experience for me, while Park Tavern was pretty crappy from day 1). I always thought it was interesting that two places owned by the same group located 3 blocks from one another could be so different in quality.

Strangely enough, I had a quite different experience with Park Cafe. My wife and I went there several times and each time the food and the service were both quite good. If they hadn't been, we wouldn't have returned, especially with their prices. But we got our money's worth -- perhaps just a run of luck.
