There had been hopes (and rumors) that the old Team Store space at Half and N Streets at Nats Park would become a restaurant of some sort, but the team is now marketing the spot as "Centerfield Social," where for a $100 a person with a minimum of 100 guests you can "book Nationals Park's newest pregame gathering spot right inside the gates."
Reserving the space also apparently gets you an "all-inclusive food and beverage package, including beer and wine, starting 2 hours before game time," along with "Infield Box seating close to the action."
(Though I imagine if someday some restaurant operator somewhere reallyreallyreally wanted that space....)

The space for the new team store was used as an outdoor event space (after Sony left). My alumni group rented it out for a pre-game dinner once. This seems like a reasonable temporary use for the space until they can find something better to do with it.

If they started the permit process for a restaurant tomorrow, there's no way buildout would finish before the end of this season. So hopefully they're just trying to monetize the space for the rest of the season, with an eye towards opening some kind of restaurant/bar as a new amenity for 2016?

I would think it's certainly within their power to open a year-round establishment in that spot. My guess this decision is an acknowledgement that there won't be enough demand to justify the cost of building out a restaurant right now. Absent a baseball game, there won't be any reason to walk by that part of the neighborhood until after all the construction across N Street is complete.

One option the Natiomals should consider is keeping the Red Porch open throughout the year. Perhaps the cost of extra security needed for the stadium would prevent it, but many visitors from out of town would likely go there if the Red Porch served food/drinks during the off-season.

When the ballpark design was first unveiled in 2006, there were discussions about keeping the Red Porch open all year (it may have even originally been pitched that way, I can't remember exactly and don't feel like hitting the archives right now). But any notions of keeping it open all year that would have to wait until there are a whole lot more people in the area on non-game days, and even then I think the security issues, etc., would be a big hurdle.

This will also have to wait until there are more residents and visitors in the area but a weekend flea market and farmers market would be perfect for the vast amount of sidewalk space at the corner of 1st St and Potomac Ave that sits unused.
