4th at Virginia, Looking West-Southwest (see more)

New Jersey Avenue, south of the freeway, looking east, before and after the clearing of brush and trees that happened late last week:

This appears to be the work that William C. Smith mentioned would be coming, as part of their preparations for infrastructure work in advance of their 880 New Jersey Avenue apartment project. More before-and-afters here.
(That's 225 Virginia/200 I in the background, if you're bewildered at what you're seeing in this new view.)
(This is the first in what will be an avalanche of new photos over the next few days, after I drove around for about two hours grabbing scads of shots that I have been guilt ridden about not getting to. Rather than trying to put them up in one overwhelming post, I'll be passing them along in manageable bites.)

No one seems to be concerned that this building will eliminate Canal Street and thus will be built across the original path of L'Enfant's canal. Since L'Enfant's plan is listed on the National Register, shouldn't this building be precluded from building across a significant part of the plan? Also, part of the apparent logic for allowing Canal Street to be closed (and thus create a full square block) is that the developer will "re-open" I Street SE. From any map I've been able to review, the area was always an open & undeveloped space with the exception of the canal - I Street doesn't appear to have actually existed. "Restoring" the grid pattern, eliminating the angular Canal Street, and building one more block sized monster of a building will do nothing but continue the dull urban environment created by all the other new block sized buildings of near SE - a generational opportunity lost.

Just one point of clarification--it's not going to be a block-sized building. They are planning four buildings on Square 737.

What about James Creek Canal? The Washington City Canal was a failure. There is nothing left of the canal. I think if they were going to declare anything historical it would have been where Canal Park is but there was no canal to be found. After the sewer pit was filled in there were railroad tracks along with a larger trash transfer footprint in that area....

Did anyone notice or care about the demise of the lovely Southern Magnolia at the trash transfer station. Sad they couldn't just have moved and bagged it for transplant.
