Half at K, Looking North-Northeast (see more)

The Capitol Riverfront BID just wrapped up its 2010 Annual Meeting, which certainly seemed to be the largest of them so far. The big part of the meeting is the unveiling of the Annual Report, chock full of statistics and photos. I'm not going to summarize it, mainly because I've been writing all year about most of the news and data contained in it, and also because if you're truly interested in the neighborhood you should read it yourself. :-)
There were two items in Michael Stevens' remarks that I thought were of note, though:
* Apparently an agreement has been worked out with DC Water (aka WASA) that will allow the "connection" between Diamond Teague Park (across from Nationals Park) and the Yards Park to be built, starting this spring. In the past, a floating bridge has been discussed as how this connection would be completed, but have asked the BID for more info and will post when I know more.
* In discussing the many parks of the neighborhood, Michael Stevens said that they are "hoping" that Canal Park will be completed in 2011--though, as he said that, the slide being displayed showed 2012 as the expected completion date. Given that the park is supposed to take 12-14 months to build, it would seem to be unlikely that the entire park would be ready before the end of next year, though perhaps some portions of it might be able to be open sooner.
UPDATE: Here's the slides used by Michael Stevens during his remarks; the information on the connection between Teague and the Yards is on pages 22-24, with a rendering showing a walkway out over the water, looking exactly like an extension of the boardwalk at the Yards. The proposed project is listed as "a partnership among Forest City Washington, DC Water and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development." And, on slide 27, Canal Park is listed with a delivery date of 2012.
(PS: I also enjoyed seeing one of my Yards Park photos on the second of the slides shown by DC Water's George Hawkins; maybe next time they'll ask me if they can use it!)

it was a nice event (Although I dont seem to see much work being done on Canal Park) Am I missing something or are the workers invisible?

Hi, JD, I saw 'Freeway Underpasses' mentioned in the slides. Did they say anything specific about the underpass on New Jersey? Thank you.

JD says: (12/14/10 4:27 PM)
@Andy: nothing specific, other than wanting to continue to work on beautifying them and improving the connections between neighborhoods. I assume this has something to do with the money they were applying for to spiffy up the NJ Avenue underpass, but I haven't heard anything more.

the connector between the yards and diamond teague parks is great news!

the lack of activity on canal park is worrisome. i'm still worried that a new administration could yank the funding on a project that isn't theirs and that hasn't been started yet. i don't recall all the funding details but i believe dc was cutting a big check for part of it.

congrats to the BID for putting on a great event!

JD - it was my pleasure to meet you yesterday!

There was a booth at the last 8th St festival that showed the murals that they are planning to do. I can't find the actual drawings online, but here's a starting point:

The mural at 8th St is different than the sea of blue waves and lights planned for the NJ Ave underpass...they had handouts at one of the ANC meeting but can't find them on-line but it was canxed due to BID budget

slide presentation is nice however the stereotypical asian man with camera on slide 23 and the man showing a little too much PDA on slide 24 are interesting choices

for those panting over the start of the park, I know it's tough to wait for the area to appreciate to justify your living in an overpriced box, but give it time

JD says: (12/17/10 11:55 AM)
"Those panting over the start of the park." Hmmmm. Perhaps I should tally up which reader has posted the most comments on Canal Park over the years. I can't imagine who that reader would end up being.

MJM says: (12/17/10 2:43 PM)
You noticed that too with the camera - thought that was pretty funny

John says: (12/18/10 10:33 AM)
Anyone know if/when the boardwalk/trail along the Navy Yard will be open to general public users? That would be an easy way to connect the open space near the river.

MJM says: (12/18/10 10:35 AM)
Well the sign that was put up following the groundbreaking was removed - maybe that is the first step in Gray's plan of removing any mention of Fenty from Washington DC

JD says: (12/18/10 10:36 AM)
The latest update I got was that talks are "progressing."

C says: (12/18/10 11:58 AM)
