As much as I liked Anthony Williams, shouldn't it be the guy who's idea it was to give away the city's money and build a stadium for the MLB franchise? I mean, come on, former Mayor Williams should be the one to throw out the first pitch and if not him, how about someone who hasn't thumbed his nose at the District for the past 8 years?

This is a good time to note that comments are still on a trial basis here. There are tons of places out on the web where people can go to argue and get on soapboxes, and I really want JDLand to remain the oasis of civility that it's always been. If things get too political, I'm going to turn the comments back off. The site has thrived just fine without them, after all....

I strongly suspect that Bush will not come to the opener, and we will not see him nor any other representative from his administration throw out the first ball. Bush is very thin-skinned and does not like to make appearances anywhere where there will not be at least a token politeness. Nationals Park will not be one of those places.
In the absence of Bush, the most appropriate person to throw out the first pitch would be Mayor Fenty, even though he did his damnest to kill both this stadium and the return of baseball to Washington. But if he's willing to show up, I'm willing to applaud as I did this past April. Besides, I
genuinely wish him success in his office, and I can see past his positions to see what he represents. Hatred of Bush is so high in Washington, that I fear that that will be impossible at next year's opener.

Sorry JD, wasn't trying to be political, just still pissed about DC forking out $ for security and getting no re-imbursement. D or R, doesn't matter to me, it's still a really crappy thing to do to a city, any city. Of course, although I'm not native to DC, this place holds a very special place in my heart and I hate to see it getting screwed.
As for the 1st pitch, Fenty as Mayor is a good choice. But Williams and Fenty (have 2 people ever jointly thrown out a 1st pitch?) would be a better choice as it brings the Williams admin that pushed for the stadium together with the one who now has to make it a success.
Of course, I'd much rather see a living player from the old team (Senators) throw out the first pitch; I love the continuity idea that brings to mind.
